David sighs and runs a hand through his sandy blonde hair. "okay. They're rubies. We have to fight them. We need an army to do that. We have to build one. Is that all, or do you have another insane request?" His stormy eyes lock with mine. I miss the soft, gentle look that they had in them when we first met. I'm afraid that look has been permanently taken away. I realize that I may never see it again. And thinking that makes me want it back even more. But the look that they have in them now is terrible. I know that he doesn't think that we will ever be able to destroy Ruby, and that has made him cold, sad. He doesn't believe that we can change anything.

But that is not what scares me most.

His eyes are hopeless.

A cold dread reaches up through me and twists itself around my heart. If David doesn't think we can do this, then Cinda will probably side with him. After all, they are family. I'm on my own if he doesn't cooperate.

I need him. I need them both. If I am going to have any chance at stopping Ruby, I need them.

I finally open my mouth. "David, please...." my voice trails off. I try to say more, but the words can't force themselves out around the lump that has appeared in my throat. They catch there, adding on to the lump. I hate that feeling.

David walks over to me. He stands very close to me, and our bodies are almost touching. Then he whispers, "You're insane. And you're going to get us killed. Now leave my sister and me alone, so that only one of us dies. And I'm telling you, it's not going to be me or Cinda." Then he brushes past me, with Cinda following him. They leave me alone in the room.

The lump in my throat breaks apart. All of the words that I wanted to say come spilling out. But they don't come out of my mouth.

They disguise themselves in water, and then they force their way out of my eyes.
