My half-closed eyes fully open. Slowly they take in their blurry atmosphere. My whole body stiffens and freezes with fear when I see a glint of metal in the dark. Once my eyes adjust I realize what the shape is. Ronald stands over Ella. In his hand, an instrument that causes my heart to race and my blood to boil.
A gun.
A gun, held to my Ella’s temple. Ronald hasn’t realized that I know what act of evil he is about to perform, so ever so carefully I pretend to stir, and drape my arm over Ella’s still body. Her chest rises and falls, oblivious to the gun that could bring her death. My whole body shakes with rage and love and shame for Ella. I want to kick this phony man until he screams for mercy. But I have to be still, because that man holds the gun. Ronald notices my movement and swallows hard. He does not back down. How broken could a man be to kill an innocent girl? In front of his family? I have to do something, and soon. I will kill him, no matter his family. Painstakingly slow, I lift my leg, preparing to kick his stomach. But I am too late. Ronald looks at me, sees that I am awake. He eyes me despairingly, full of pity and sorrow. He squeezes his eyes shut.
And pulls the trigger.
