I blinked my eyes several times. This was the man that I'd babbled to and told that I was sneaking into the school! The huge, hot mountain that was a teacher in my brothers' school. I had to keep repeating that he was a teacher!
Stay away from Grayson's teachers!
Dad came rushing over and threw a notepad and pen in my hands before saying I had to serve them all while he told the kitchen staff about the amount of people and gave a helping hand. I balanced Rex on my hip and just looked at them as they filled the booths and tables. This was going to be hell. There honestly shouldn't be this much testosterone under one roof.
They were all huge. Luke was definitely the biggest but I could see he was also the oldest. The youngest must have been about five and I could see he was surrounded by his brothers. But then the closer I looked the more they all seemed to act like brothers.
I quickly walked over and grabbed the carrier for Rex. I put him in his high chair where he screamed the place down and then secured the carrier to my body before putting him in facing out so that he should stay nice and calm. I felt those eyes on me once again and looked quickly to catch Luke staring at me with an angry expression on his face. Well he clearly wasn't a fan of babies!
After finally sorting a crying Rex, I walked over to each table taking drinks orders, coming to Luke, Sam and Gray's table last. There was another young boy on there that looked to be about six but I could be wrong with the genes that run through this lot.
"And what drinks can I get for you four?" I asked still looking down at my pad and pen and slightly rocking Rex while I stood. I could feel he was drifting and he might have a quick nap if I was lucky.
"Water." Luke said sharply. Had I pissed him off?
"Water, please." Sam said eyeing Luke. I didn't know why. "My brother Daniel will have a water too please." I looked at the little boy and he pouted out his lip like that's not what he wanted at all.
"Do you know," I started, looking at Daniel, "I just made a chocolate milkshake and I'm not going to be able to drink it now because I have to serve all these grumpy gorillas. Do you know anyone that would like it Daniel?" His eyes burst open and he nodded with such eagerness I was worried his head might fall off. I chuckled and could see Sam smile and shake his head at his brother.
"I'll have a coke please Dotty. Do you want me to have Rex while you serve everyone? Or I can help serve?" Poor Gray. I could see he was torn. He hasn't spoken this much for a while and it was nice to see him so excited about spending time with his new friends.
"Thank you but no thank you. This will be my true test to babysitting and waitressing. Poor Rex will be napping soon anyway. He's definitely your brother. Could sleep for days if he didn't get hungry. I must be the odd one out of the family." I tried to comfort him but it worked better than I thought. The whole table seemed to relax and I found myself smiling at being able to ease whatever tension there was.
"So that's your brother?" Sam asked Gray curiously.
"Yeah, he wasn't planned. That's my sister Dorothy but she'll kill you if you call her that. Either Dot or Dotty if you want to keep your head. And then that's Rex my baby brother. My Dad's in the kitchen somewhere but I'll introduce you when he comes out." He smiles at me and I give him an encouraging nod and a smile as I walk off and tend to the lists of drinks I needed make. Luckily most were water so it was easier than I thought.
I quickly made a chocolate milkshake for the lovely Daniel and plonked it in front of him with a wink. Then I went to putting the bottles of water and glasses on all the tables. By the time I'd given Gray his coke, Rex had drifted off and I was silently trying to get him out of his carrier and into the pushchair without too much movement. I could sense a lot of eyes on me but I put it down to the fact that there were lots of hungry boys/men waiting for me to take their orders.
As I got him down Dad came through the doors and gave me a thumbs up before ducking back in getting ready for the influx of orders.
I dashed from table to table and was actually dumbfounded by the sheer amount of food being ordered. I had to take a tables order and run it to the kitchen window before going onto the next. I was going to sleep tonight!
The last table was Gray's and I could see Daniel slurping the last of the milkshake.
"Now that's what I like to see. Did you enjoy that big man?" I asked while I bent my knees to get down to the same level as him.
"Oh yeah! That was amazing. You make the best milkshakes Dotty!" My heart! This boy!
"Well, that's something we can agree on." Gray said and gave me a tentative smile. I smiled a huge smile back at him and felt my eyes moisten a little. I was just so glad we were ok.
A throat cleared and I looked to see Luke staring at me like he could see into my soul.
"Sorry, right what can I get for you?"
"Orders up!" My dad shouted and I quickly wrote down all the meals before rushing over and starting to serve everyone the meals they wanted. No one complained, no one said anything about the wait or the fact I could only carry two maybe three plates at a time.
By the time I was putting Luke's food in front of him I was actually starting to worry I'd done something wrong.
"About today, I really am sorry I implied I was trying to sneak into the school. I panicked and it just came out. In some sense, I was sneaking but not in a bad way. More of a, I don't want my brother to have to explain why his older sister was parading around the school, kind of way."
His mouth twitched and I thought for a second he might actually smile but then his grumpy brooding look returned.
"It's fine. Don't worry about it. Just try not to sneak in anymore." I laughed and nodded about to walk away when Sam caught my attention.
"You'll have to come back Wednesday anyway for try outs after school." I quirked a brow and then looked to Gray for an explanation.
"It's fine don't worry. You don't need to be there." He said looking down and cutting his food.
"Well now I hundred percent want to be there and want to know what I'm being there for." I said.
"Look it's nothing. I don't even know if it's a good idea. I know nothing about American football and honestly I think I'll make a complete ass of myself."
"Language!" Both Luke and I said together and I saw Sam laugh out of the corner of my eye.
"Right, err, right ok. This is what we do. Once all these are gone, give me about half an hour to rush round and clean tables and floors. Dad can do dishes and then we can go to my room and look at everything there is to know about the game. If there's time we can go out on the lawn and have a go at playing. I think I can handle a tackle from you. But let's not break my ribs. Maybe if I wear some padding..." I think thought to myself.
"Wow, Dotty really? You'd do that?" Gray asked and it made me realise he had no idea what I was willing to do to help him.
"Of course. Now eat up and I'll think about how I have to learn how to throw and catch a bloody ball myself!" Oh god, this is turning out to be a right handful of a day!
