My body seemed to relax slightly but it wasn't long before another gust of wind came and I was shivering again. The wolf seemed to stare at me for a second and then walked very slowly behind me. I turned slightly, trying to avoid letting him at my back. I mean he was technically a predator and I was more than likely the prey in this situation.
The wolf pushed his body around mine and I found I was wrapped in it's fur. The heat from its skin was like hugging the radiator. How did he keep so warm? It was freezing out here!
"Thank you." I whispered and I received another lick on my arm in answer. I felt like I was crazy but it seemed like the wolf understood what I said.
I stayed as still as I could to try and not startle him and soon I found myself yawning. I think the tense muscles and events of the day and the night were finally catching up with me. My shaky hand lifted as slowly as possible and I tentatively touched the top of the wolfs head. He made a low growl and I panicked that I'd done the wrong thing for a second but then his head pushed into my hand even more.
After minutes of this amazing moment of trust I knew I was only seconds away from falling asleep on my feet. The warmth from the wolf was definitely helping to try and push me over to dream land.
I stepped forward and out of the warmth making me instantly cold and the wolf looked down at me with almost a hurt look in those majestic eyes. I yawned once again and smoothed his head with a little more confidence than before.
"I could easily fall asleep here but I don't know what the hell you'll do to me if I'm out cold." I kissed my finger tips and placed them on his head before slowly walking back to the fire escape. He followed me all the way back and I was starting to get a little nervous but if he wanted to kill me I'm sure he would have done so by now.
I walked up the stairs but clearly forgot how slippery they were. My foot slipped and I went spinning forward before I grabbed onto the wolf with all my strength. My arms wrapped over his back as I came at him from above. I expected him to tear into me, to react from the sudden movement and bite, but no.
This misunderstood creature waited for me to steady myself before craning his neck to see me and licking my shoulder, arm and then my cheek. The laughter bubbled up and soon I was in fits of giggles that I haven't heard leave my mouth in a very long time.
This time I rubbed his head more confidently and slowly made my way back to my window. He didn't climb the stairs but he stayed by the first step and curled into a boulder sized ball. I looked one last time to try and store the image in my memory before clumsily climbing back through my window.
Sleep took me very easily after that and I dreamt of the most odd combinations. One minute I was standing in front of Luke and running my fingers up and down his broad chest and then the next minute I'm curled in a ball on the grass with my new wolf friend while I read and he snoozed happily.
By the time my alarm scared the hell out of me, I was more confused than ever. My subconscious was clearly a lot more imaginative than I gave her credit for.
I got ready in a daze but my jumper dress was perfect for the cold weather. It hugged my body tightly and came all the way to just below my knees. It wasn't too thick for me to work in but not thin enough that I would freeze outside. I left my hair loose and popped on some mascara and concealer for the quite visible bags under my eyes and grabbed my heal boots ready for the school run. On my way to see if Dad needed a hand with Rex, I banged on Gray's door only to nearly go flying across the room. I stumbled and dropped my boots before the boy/man or whatever the hell he is, caught me with barely contained laughter.
"What. The. Actual. Hell?" Were the only words coming out of my mouth as I snatched my hands and pulled the hair from my face. It was too long and everywhere suddenly.
