Chapter 8

"SHE'S BACK!" We said in unison.

Wait, what? How in the world is that possible?

"Who's she?" And our voices matched once again, making us puff out air.

"You go first" We pointed fingers at each other at the same time, groaning right after. Well this was ridiculous and annoying altogether. Was she copying me?

"You're Sagittarius. So you go first." I quickly outwitted her, crossing her arms over.

She bit her lip trying it hard to comeback against me. I fist-bumped myself in my head. Good job girlie.

"Madison." She said, "I saw her at the mall yesterday. And before you ask this, no it's not a coincidence. It just can't be it." Her eyes flickered rapidly, lines twisting across her face filled with uncertainty.

"Joe and I went to some ice cream parlour after the movie. He had been soooo sweet Lennie, like super extra sweet with a frickalicious cherry on top. All that he did was kiss my cheek once or twice. He even asked me if holding hands was okay with me, like. . . " I hadn't intended to, but I found myself zoning out of our super extra sweet conversation.

Her face still showed signs of exhaustion though, but her lips tilted up a bit at the remembrance of Joe. Well, at least he wasn't a total douchebag for her.

"So how'd you come across this girl Madison?" I finally framed the question, once that her dream boy's blabber did come to an end. I couldn't really recall anything about Madison; it almost felt as if she never told me about this woman.

But her name. . . It was almost too familiar to be a total foreigner to my mind

"Well, she was in the ice-cream parlour." She began, leaning back into the plush of the bed, "I am not sure if she was working there or just a customer but. . . "

The knots in her forehead twisted yet again, and I watched her closely as she shifted back and forth on my bed ". . . She-She's back. She's gonna come back. She's gonna ruin my life again! What do I do Lennie?!"

Her hands rubbed harshly against that pale face of hers, the pent up anxiety shaking through her. And this was exactly the cue for me to pull her into a warm hug. And thus I shifted towards her, wrapping my arms around her torso as softly I could.

She snuggled closer into my hug, adjusting her clumsy head into my shoulder. It didn't make sense to me. Alison had dated several people, yet never had I seen her so distressed about another random ex popping up ever before.

"Isn't she just one of your random hook-ups from college?" I inquired, running small circles over the back of her shirt.

She shook her head, a sniffle following right after.

"We never dated."

And with that, she suddenly straightened back up, her composure returning back to her. "And that's the thing. We never dated throughout our college time together, yet she seemed to have a grip over me. Five minutes. Five minutes was all that she needed to make me all mushy and senseless for her. It always felt like we never even argued over anything, that she had a thing for me and . . . like she was genuinely there for me."

"And once that I found myself falling for her, then whoosh! She went MIA! And next thing that I hear from her is a bunch of sorries and teddy bear letters. And this cycle kept repeating itself, again and again and again."

"But you never told me anything about it" I frowned, looking right into her eyes. She rolled those sapphires, looking at me in disbelief. "Come on, Lennie. You never asked about it during any of our face time calls! Why would I have told you?"

Mentally face palming myself, I sighed. She was back-- My favourite dumb best friend. "Forget it. You sure it was Madison you saw yesterday?"

She nodded. "She even waved at me, but I am not THAT dumb to fall for it. I just flashed my almighty middle finger to her the best that I could." And there came that toothy grin of hers.

I stared at her in disbelief.

How can such two different souls not only coexist on the same planet, but also become best-est of friends. I was pretty sure Satan had a hand in this.

I rubbed my face, unable to look her in the eyes. "Next time that you see her, just try your best to ignore her. There's no need to bring your fingers in between. That'll only end up worsening things."

She pouted at my straight face for a second, only to begrudgingly nod her head in another one. Alison loved flipping the bird. 'Her basic human right', she'd say proudly.

"Now it's your turn." She flashed her teeth at me. She was back in her gears, her grin said it all. "Spill"

I twiddled with my fingers for a few seconds, avoiding her gaze. The story of Stephanie, Alison and I went way back to high school. There had been quite a few times wherein Stephanie had grown way closer to Alison than anyone else, including me.

Until I asked Steph out obviously.

I wish I could turn back the clock and convince my 17 old self to stay clear of Stephanie's way

"Steph. She's back." I blurt out with my eyes shut tight. A few seconds of silence later I find myself opening them back. Alison sat silent, just squinting her eyes at me. I took it as a sign to continue my story, covering every part of my 'coincidental' encounter.

She just kept her silence throughout the whole narration. And that only made me shrink into myself further. "A-And then we might or might not have kissed each other."

"What are you? A five year old kid or somethin'?" Alison commented at the end, her eyes rolling in disbelief.

I slunk my shoulders down, trying to defend my slip-up of self control, "It-It's not like that Ally-"

"It's been years Selena. You can't just slip up like that as soon as she lays a finger on you. You can't possibly think that she came back to you with something good. She'll exhaust you. Don't do this; don't do that 'babygirl'. She's one manipulative sock of a biscuit." I heard her rant, and rant some more.

I bit my cheek from the inside, somehow feeling like a kid in front of her. "I get what you mean to say. I won't let her sweet talks get to me, I guess. But you know her. She isn't someone who just backs up like that."

The blonde mess shrugged, her hands slamming hard against my knees as her body towered over mine."Simple. You're grounded miss. If she can't meet you, she won't able to make her move."

She gave me her cowboy wink and I rolled my eyes. "The last time that I checked, I have an editor to report to. I can't just sit at home."

I pushed her weight off of me, finally rolling out of my bed. The girl behind me huffed out, her adorable pout being directed at me. I simply yawned out. I was in no mood to talk any further about the disaster that loomed over our heads.

Sunshine bore into the room from the huge window which was seated a few away from my bed. It seemed too bright for my eyes, especially on a lazy morning. What time was it, anyways?

My question was answered by Alison in no time, a wild look in her eyes as they gawked at that iphone of hers. "Holy shit Lennie! I think you're running late for work."

"So are you, dumbass!"
