A few weeks later, Christopher got admission in a college called Mount Rosemond, which offered degree courses in various subjects and was one of the best in the district.
The first day of college soon arrived. He was combing his hair in front of the mirror in his room, when Durrell came up to him.
"I am sure that you'll do great at college, Chris. Just don't let those horrible things bug you."
"I think so too, Grandpa," he answered. "I hope that I can find some nice friends here."
"You will," said Durrell.
He bid adieu to his grandson with a kiss on his forehead.
In those few weeks, Durrell had taught Christopher Tamil. He, being very quick-witted and smart, learnt everything quickly and spoke the language just as good as any local. But while he was on the bus to college, he didn't speak to anyone.
He soon reached the college, and found his class. He sat in a corner, so that no one would see him.
But alas, he was too good-looking to not be spotted. A crowd of girls gathered around him. "Hey, what's your name?"
But just then, a teacher, Krishnan, entered the class.
"Sir is here! Quick! Sit down!" said a girl.
"Good morning students," said Krishnan. "Good morning sir," wished the students.
"Christopher Johnson, come here," he said.
Christopher made a meek face and walked up to him. "Yes sir."
"Your grandfather has told me that you had a lot of trouble in life before you came here. Are you comfortable here?"
"Yes sir," he replied, cringing like an autumn leaf.
"There's no need to get nervous," said Krishnan, patting his shoulder. "Relax."
Christopher went back to his seat.
After the class was over, many students tried to befriend Christopher. But he avoided all of them and went his way.
