"Icarus..." I hissed. A sinister laugh rang out from the shadows. The sound echoed around me, making it impossible for me to locate him. I dropped down into a crouch and grabbed Trevor's hand protectively. Fear coursed through me, making it difficult for me to stand my ground, but there was no way that I would ever leave Trevor behind. He squeezed my hand reassuringly.
"Run, Ana. Go find John." His voice was weak and raspy. I shook my head vehemently.
"I won't leave you." I stood up and whipped my head around, looking for Icarus. "Quit hiding, coward." My voice was much more steady than I felt. Icarus stepped out from behind the bushes, not too far from where Trevor and I were. There was a self-confident
smirk on his lips.
"Well well! Aren't we the brave little soldier?" He stepped towards me with the slow, smooth stride of a predator. Every inch of my body was screaming run, but I planted my feet and stood there, my eyes following him carefully. He stopped and stood directly in front of me. Icarus reached up and brushed a soaked strand of hair from my face. His face softened when I didn't push him away.
"Anastasia..." he whispered softly. "My daughter." I couldn't stop the shudder that ran through me. His eyes glance down at my necklace. Surprise lit his features and he looked back up at me. "Where did you get this?" He grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me slightly. "Ana, where did you get this?!" My mouth gaped open as the words escaped me.
"What does it matter?" I asked. His mouth tightened into a straight line before he sighed, as though surrendering himself to a great burden.
"That necklace, I've seen it before. I bet your grandmother didn't even tell you about it, did she?" I shook my head, confused and frightened. Icarus' moods seemed to change with the wind, only making him more dangerous to be around. He gently lifted the necklace away from my skin.
"What is it?" I managed to choke out. He smiled sadly.
"I gave this to your mother on our first date. I always assumed she threw it away when I... left." My heart pounded erratically in my chest. Mom was the one who chucked it into the pond? Just then, a bright glow erupted from my necklace. Almost unbidden, my eyes flew up to his and looked upon the images dancing in them.
A silver fox, with long gashes down its sides and blood dripping from its jaws, stood snarling. There was a flash, a spray of red, then the fox collapsed onto the ground. One name blasted through my mind. WILSON. Wilson, Icarus' partner. The first victim.
The next victim appeared to me, an elderly woman with hazel eyes. I somehow sensed that she was Wilson's mother. She was screaming accusations at the top of her lungs. I think she must have been the first person to realized Icarus' true self. I didn't get to see her form before she died.
I staggered backwards, breaking his eye contact with me. I tripped on something behind me and landed flat on my back. Icarus' eyes widened with surprise before he must have realized what was happening. A slow, sadistic smirk slid across his face. He crammed his hands into his pockets and sauntered towards me with a predatorial grace. I scrambled back, but he was quicker. He landed on top of me with one knee on either side of my rib cage and both hands keeping my face directed towards his. He wouldn't let me break eye contact, forcing me to watch all of his atrocities. I squirmed and kicked and writhed, but Icarus was strong, stronger than I was. The last thing I noticed before the visions swallowed me up was the abysmal black of his irises.
