"What part of this don't you understand?! We can't keep doing this!"

"Then why haven't you left yet huh!? Why do you keep coming back?!"

"Because I care about you and your well-being! That's why!"

"Oh yeah... you seem to care so much about me that you want me to change my entire lifestyle because you don't like it."

"What you're doing is not ok Ponk! This needs to change for this to work, but if you really, truly can't figure out how to do that, then the only thing I see happening is that we go our separate ways."

Arguments. That's all the two had for each other anymore. Always something to argue about every time they met. Always something that the other did. Always something that the other didn't. There was always something.

Sam involuntarily let out a Creeper hiss, stressed at the conversation at hand, his golden claws scraping the surface of the once flawless marble countertop as he clutched his hands. He sighed, loosening his grip as he buried his face into his hands. Trying to understand what Ponk couldn't understand. Why he couldn't just let go...

"Ponk please for the love of god, at least try to put it behind you. You're better than this," his voice softened, "I know that you're better than this..."

There was a moment of silence between the two. Ponk sat on the sofa across the room facing Sam as he stood behind the kitchen counter. The distance between them felt like it stretched too far to reach back across to the other. As if the gap separating them just grew wider each time they tried to fix it. The two just stared at each other in the silence, nothing to be said. Ponk wanted to say something to make Sam feel better, but he couldn't think of anything that wouldn't be a lie. So instead, he was forced to stare into Sam's pained eyes, practically on the verge of tears. There was nothing he could say to stop them, and nothing he would be willing to do.

"You have nothing to say? Nothing to say for yourself?" Sam finally said, breaking the silence.

"No... I really don't..." Ponk let out with a sigh, sinking into the sofa cushions. "I haven't the slightest thing."

"Wow," he sniffled. "Just- wow."

Tears started rolling down Sam's checks uncontrollably. He tried wiping them away but it was of no use, they would just keep coming back.

"You know what," he stood back from the counter, sniffing once more, "I'm gone."

"Sam-"

"NO-" he hissed again. "I'M GONE-" and he started towards the door.

"S-Sam please," Ponk pleaded, standing up from the sofa.

His claws scraping the metal doorknob within his clutch, Sam stood there staring down blankly with shaky breaths, not wanting to look up at Ponk.

"Sam, I love you. No matter what happens I will always love you. Just- just remember that ok? If you choose to forget everything else about me, just know that I love you."

He clenched the metal knob and tried to hold back pained tears, but ultimately failed. He brought himself together as best he could and closed the door, letting go of the knob, his claws sliding off the metal one by one before his arm fell limp by his side.

"I love you too Ponk. But there is a saying, if we don't have trust, then we don't have anything," he took another shaky breath, turning and looking up into his beloved's beautiful brown eyes, "and right now Ponk, I'm struggling to give you trust."

Ponk stood silently looking back at Sam, not knowing what to say next

Ponk stood silently looking back at Sam, not knowing what to say next. But he didn't have to, because Sam took the next words.

"I risk my life every day against all the sick people in this city. All the gangs, all the thieves, all the people that have something wrong in their head and a weapon in their hand. Why? Because it's my job to protect all the innocent people that live in this city too. I just can't see how you don't understand, I can't risk everything else in my life, my career, my reputation, my safety, my family, my heart."

Sam let out a deep sigh, putting his hand on the doorknob again and pulling it open.

"I can't be in love with a criminal, and still keep you safe."

Then he stepped out the door and closed it behind himself, catching one last glimpse of his beloved.
