Episode 2 - A Dim Start

It felt like only yesterday when they brought me to this family's home. A home where I lived with two loving parents and their only daughter. Her name was Rebeca Hanson.

I don't clearly remember what happened before that day. My memories were a blank slate before that. The first thing I can recall is men in black suits and sunglasses bringing me to the place where I thought I would be living for many years. The place where I would have a happy, normal life. The place where I'd eat dinner with my family every day, where I'd play with my sister, and where I'd be raised and loved as a child should be.

I was only 8 years old the day I met Rebeca; she had such a cute dopey smile on her face when she first saw me. She was roughly the same age as me... and yet she was so happy! Telling me with a smile,

"Hello, you must be Aya, you're so cute! I am so glad we're going to be sisters!"

I felt my cheeks turning red as I just looked at her in awe like she was my saving angel. I couldn't say anything but seeing her reach her hand out to me like that I couldn't help but reach out to hold it in return.

Then all of a sudden that sweet, bright, beautiful memory evaporated into ash. Slowly, I watched as my new family disappeared before my eyes. The father who taught me to be strong, the mother who taught me to be kind and caring, to be a lady, and my beautiful sweet sister, who was also my best friend. Her smiling face slowly disappeared and I reached out, desperately trying to grab that same hand, but the only thing my hands grasped was black smoke. It flowed out from between my useless fingers as I shouted out.

"Don't leave! Please!"

Tears fall down my cheeks as my arm slowly falls, and in the spot where she disappeared an older, teenage Rebeca appears but... she looks deranged.

The joints of her neck and limbs seem to be stitched on, while her skin shines a deathly pale white. Painfully cracked lips now ashen and purple in color adorn her face. Those blue eyes that used to be so warm and kind stare dully at me, all the joy and light drained from them. There's no soul in this Rebeca, it's as if she's an empty doll. She still wears her high school uniform but it was all bloody and dirty and tattered.

A bone-chilling smile crept across her face as she continued to look at me, and then her lips started speaking

"Really? I never left you, don't you remember who left who?"

My eyes widened as she spoke, feeling all my happiness drain out, as she spoke again.

"Don't forget what you let happen... What you did Aya."

Her body lurched a little and then she started walking towards me, blood slowly dripping off her with each step she took. A small "Plink" sounded every time a drop hit the ground. Reaching her hands out towards me for a hug, I felt my body take a quick step back, shaking a little. She looks at me and asks,

"Why are you backing away? Don't you miss me?" She giggles as she walks towards me.

I take another step back horrified, feeling the fear reach the pit of my stomach, every part of my body is screaming at me to run! I hear her giggling again before she speaks.

"Poor Aya, if only anyone else would be able to understand you, though they would never understand you like I do... like I did."

All I could mutter out was, "No... g-get away... please no.."
