Episode 5 - Some Answered Questions

POV AYA

On the day of my 8th birthday, I was walking with my birth mother to get some groceries.

To get there we would often walk down the main shopping strip; it was one of my mother's favorite little pleasures in life. She'd take my hand in her own and lead me down the colorful street that almost appeared magical to me at that age. The shops towered over me, filled to the brim with beautiful clothes, exciting new toys, and food that left the most tantalizing smells wafting in the air.

Those trips were so fun, at least until we actually got to our destination. Waiting for my mom to pick out groceries, sometimes taking several minutes to pick out something as simple as 'the best turnip" was exhausting! I'd usually ask to wait outside to enjoy the scenery instead, but today I still found myself terribly and inescapably bored.

So, like any bored child, I decided the best course of action was to find something fun, quickly wandering off into the sea of stores

Eventually, I stopped by a glass window where I'd seen some particularly nice toys displayed earlier. I couldn't help but press my hands against the glass as I stared at them, smiling and bouncing on my feet as Imagined all the things I could do with toys like these.

That was when I met that boy.

"I like the toys they make here too." A young, muffled voice spoke out.

I looked to my right, seeing a young boy about the same age as me. His eyes were a striking blue, almost like the ocean, made even more vivid by his contrastingly pale skin and coal-black hair. His clothes were a blue t-shirt combined with a black sweater that he had left half-zipped up and a pair of blue jeans. He would have been a nice but relatively normal boy if it weren't for the odd gas mask covering the lower half of his face.

Realizing I'd been staring I quickly swiveled my face back to the glass.

"They're ok, I guess," I say, pouting a little as I felt the heat in my cheeks.

My embarrassment only continued to grow as I realized he'd seen me all excited over a bunch of kiddie toys.

"Uh-huh," he says as he gave me a questioning look.

As he turned away his nose gave a small sniff and he stilled. Tilting his head up towards the sky he squinted. I Looked up with him, seeing a few greyish clouds in the sky but nothing else. Before I could ask what he was doing he turned back to me.

"Looks like it's going to storm soon, you should get back inside," he said.

I look between him and the barely darkened sky.

"Huh!? But the clouds aren't even close to rainy yet!" I exclaimed.

"Storms can come pretty quick y'know" he continued "Just trust me, you don't want to get soaked, do you?"

I turned away from him with a 'Humph', he must be trying to get rid of me, well good luck kid!

Deciding to call him out on it I said "Oh yeah? How can you tell anyway?"

He watched me for a moment until I heard a little chuckle, WHY THAT-

I stopped.

My anger slowly dissipated as I realized that his laugh didn't sound taunting. It was quiet and happy, somehow though... it also sounded a little sad.
