"Why do you guys look like you just saw a ghost?" Scott asked us as we emerged from the elevator into the kitchen and lounge area.
We looked at each other for a minute, silently deciding to tell Scott and Vision, who just looked up from reading a pretty lengthy book, as much of the story as we could without having to relive the suppressed trauma.
Before either of them could speak up, I decided to break the ice by saying, "Just a quick warning, I'm pretty sure Pete, Shuri, and I are all scarred for life... It all started when we noticed how weird Cap typed when he used the computer over there, all clunky and hunt-and-pecky, which made us wonder what he was even using the computer for in the first place..."
*Flashback - 3 days before current time*
"What is he doing over there?" I whispered to Shuri and Pete as we stood around the fridge, pretending to peruse the shelves for snacks.
"He's been over there for like hours, just typing away, not letting anyone see what he's up to," Shuri added to our collective inquiry.
"We should try and poke-around when he leaves to see what he was so absorbed in. Maybe like set up some hidden cameras so we can figure out what his password is to his account. Once we have that, we can just pick a time where he's busy to come back and look through his search history." Pete said, looking over in Cap's direction every few seconds to make sure he hadn't picked up on what they were saying. As he was finishing up, I checked in that direction too, and, as far as I could tell from what he was outwardly expressing, he wasn't listening in, still too absorbed in whatever had captivated his attention at the moment.
"Dude, that's actually pretty smart." Shuri told him, smacking him on the shoulder quietly.
"How are we gonna do this?" I asked, pretending to examine a jar of pickles.
"I'll go grab a little webcam with a live feed, back in a flash." Pete said, then proceeded to flip into the air and stick to the wall, all without making a sound.
"Oh come on, how come he gets to do that and I'm stuck with weapons training?" I said, rolling my eyes at the look Shuri gave me.
"He'll be back in a hot minute, let's worry about how we're going to distract Cap long enough to install that webcam." She said, absentmindedly picking through the bag of fresh produce.
"We should tell him my dad wanted to give him something and left it in his room." I told her, which added a little smirk to her already smiling mouth.
"Let's actually put something in his room first so we're believable." She said quietly.
"My dad's actually been telling me that he has a gift for Steve he wanted to deliver, I guess we could just go get that and put it in there for him." I told her, already setting the pickle jar back where it was and moving quietly towards the door.
Once we got out of earshot into the hallway, we called Peter, telling him to meet us outside of Cap's room as soon as he got the webcam.
We swiftly jogged/power walked down the hallway towards my dad's room, stopping outside his door to listen for movement inside. Once we had cleared that he wasn't currently in his room, I quickly ran inside and checked the top of his closet, which is where he hides most things.
Carefully grabbing the pristinely-wrapped gift box, I made my way out into the hallway, grabbing Shuri by the arm and dragging her over to Cap's room. Peter, waiting outside while trying to look like he was supposed to be there, saw us coming and moved to check the room, just in case there were any unwanted-visitors on the other side of the door. Giving us a silent thumbs-up, I opened the door and set the gift on his bed so that he could find it easily once he returned.
"That should do it," I whispered to them, motioning for them to follow me back to the kitchen/lounge.
"Got the webcam," Peter said quietly, pulling it out of his pocket to show us.
"Perfect. Once we get in there and send Cap off to his room, make sure you get that thing up-and-running as fast as possible so he doesn't suspect anything." Shuri said.
We finished our trip to the kitchen/lounge in silence, each getting our own game faces on so that we were ready for whatever happened with Cap.
As I opened the door, I yelled over to Cap, "UNCLE STEVE! my dad says he has something he wants to give youuuuuuuu! He said he left it in your roooooommmm!" I said, trying to suppress my giggles as he flew from the computer, shielding the screen with his body.
"Oh, um, alright, I'll go take a look then," he said, quickly turning to the computer and logging out before leaving to run off to his room.
"Alright, go Pete. Make sure we can see the keyboard and screen once he sits down." Shuri said, pushing him towards the wall behind the computer.
As he climbed the wall and opened the vent to hide the camera, Shuri and I took glances outside the room to make sure no one walked in while we were carrying out our master plan.
Miraculously, he was able to get the thing installed and safely return to the ground before anyone walked in.
Moving over to the pantry, we began to inspect the food, stalling until Cap came back. Not a second later, he barged through the doors, his face the color of a ripe tomato.
"What's going on, Shmaptin?" I asked him, looking up from the food label I had been inspecting
."Oh, hi Winnie, how are you guys, uh, doing?" He asked, voice cracking several times.
"We're doing great, but you never answered the question. What's going on with you? You look like you just sat through an hour of embarrassing family story time." Shuri said, kicking Pete's leg to get him to close his mouth, which had previously dropped to around shin level.
"Might it have anything to do with your gift?" I asked him, not caring that I was somewhat overstepping.
"Nah, what do you, uh, what do you mean? It was a perfectly normal gift between, uh, friends, yeah..." He said, all 6' grown-ass man now seeming like a tiny kicked puppy.
"Alright then, whatever you say, Shmaptin..." I said with a smirk, winking towards him.
He opened his mouth to respond, but decided against it, instead opting to walk back over to the computer and put his head in his hands. After a moment, he checked over his shoulder to see if we were still there. We made a break for the pantry so that he would think we left.
As we sat on the floor, desperately silencing our giggles and waiting for him to log onto the computer again, I heard him start typing on the keyboard. Pete pulled out his phone, which was recording the feed from the webcam. In 30 seconds, he had edited the clip to zoom in on where Cap had entered his password, slowing down the footage to see which keys had been pressed."Americas_Ass? Really?" He said quietly, looking over at us and pretending to vomit.
This sent the three of us into another silent fit of giggles.
After we had calmed down for the second time, we crawled out from our hiding spot and made our way back to my room. Once we had closed the door and turned some loud music on, the three of us burst into laughter for at least five minutes. By the end of it, none of us had full control over our breathing and we just sat in silence, the biggest grins stretching across our faces.
"What do we want to do now?" Shuri asked.
"We gotta know what the heck was so interesting that he sat there for literal hours." Pete said, not looking up from his webcam feed.
"Well, no one sits and looks at the search history long enough for us to check it entirely, so I guess we'll have to wait until he leaves and we're sure no one else will barge in on us." I said, racking my brain for when the next group training session was for the majority of the team.
"This afternoon at four there's a group training session that should occupy most everyone. We should come back then." I said, looking to the others to see if they agreed.
"Alright, guess we've got some time to kill." Pete said, still looking at the webcam.
"I hope Clint doesn't come across that camera between now and four or else we're gonna get a lot of uncomfortable questions." Shuri said, a worried look settling onto her face.
"Nah, he'd probably be more interested in seeing what the old guy was up to anyway." I said.
"You're right, maybe we should go see what he's doing around four..." She said, the worried look quickly being replaced with a devilish grin.

"Move out of the way!" Clint said, hunching over mine and Pete's shoulders to see what was on the computer screen.
"You'll be able to see everything just fine once we get logged-on." I told him, turning to smack him.
"Fine, fine, calm down..." He said.
"Ok, let's put in the password," Shuri said, trying to rein-in our distractions.
"On it," Pete said, reaching over to type on the keyboard.
"Wait, his password is America's Ass?" Clint said, working on a joke as we finished logging on.Before he could finish that thought, the desktop loaded and Peter took the mouse, moving the cursor over the Google Chrome icon and opening the browser.
"Alright, let's see what he's been up to..." I mumbled under my breath.
Pete went to view the browser history, opening up the small window that would show us what kind of stuff he's been looking up.
"Ok, most recent searches are......." Peter said, trailing off.
Before he could look any more, the three of us shot our hands over his eyes and moved him away from the monitor.
"Guys, what the heck? What are you doing?" He said, trying to get us to let go.
"No, kid, can't let you see this one." Clint said, moving between Peter and the screen.
"Come on, really? This is so unfair! There's no point in keeping me from seeing it, I'll just come back later and look at it when you can't stop me." He said, finally separating himself from us.
"Alright, fine, but we warned you." Shuri said, moving back to where she was before they had tried to protect him.
"So, back to where we were, top searches are 'sweater weather,' 'el gee bee tea terms Wikipedia,' 'what is a twinkie,' and 'stucky?'..........." He said, voice getting quieter with each entry.
The group sat in silence for a good ten seconds.
"...uh, there's also 'difference between Star Trek and Star Wars,' 'YMCA dance,' 'what is butch,' 'what is badonkadonk,' 'eggplant and peach emojis?' and, uh, 'troubleman soundtrack'." Shuri said very quietly.
"Well, um, maybe we should head back to our rooms and... take a nice, long think." Clint says, walking over to the door and picking up speed as he got closer.
"Yeah, maybe that is best..." I said, turning to the screen and logging off of the computer.
As I get up to leave, I notice Pete stays frozen in his seat.
"Pete, you coming buddy?" I asked him, walking back and grabbing him by the arm.
He remains silent, looking over and slowly blinking, almost in a shell-shocked trance.
"Alright, c'mon buddy, time to go back to our rooms..." I said as I dragged him out of his chair with the help of Shuri.
The two of us ended up carrying him back to his room and placing him on his back on the bed."Uhm, well, that was, uh, interesting..." He kind of mumbled under his breath.
"That's the smartest thing you've ever said." Shuri replied as she walked off towards her room in a daze.
"You gonna be ok Pete?" I asked him from just outside his door.
After he didn't respond for a couple seconds, I turned and walked across the hall, opening my room.
"Well, at least breakfast is gonna be interesting..." I said to myself as I went to the bathroom and started filling up the tub.
This was gonna take several long soaks to wash away.
*Time skip back to present-day*
"So that's why you three have been avoiding Captain Rogers like the Bubonic plague!" Vision said, setting his book down on the table and levitating over to where we were standing.
"Come here, let me give you all a hug." He said, opening his arms as we began to crash into him.Just as we were about to make contact with his body, he phased into his semi-solid state, causing us to fall through him and onto the floor.
"I love you all, but that'll teach you to keep out of other people's private business. Learned that the hard way myself when I first came to live in the compound and still didn't quite have a grasp on human interaction. Mr. Stark was not too happy to learn that I had access to his browsing history..." He said, absorbed in his own thoughts for a brief moment.
"I just can't believe you guys thought anything good would come out of looking up a hundred year-old man's search history. I mean, c'mon, there's no way the guy knows what an incognito tab is." Scott said, cracking a grin while continuing to make a sandwich.
"Never again." I said to no one in particular.
"Never again." Shuri and Peter repeated after me with the same hazy look.
