Byakuya Togami is always cold.

It's not something that's ever particularly bothered him, as a matter of fact he's grown quite accustomed to it. Cold rooms are always frigid, and the outdoors during the winter months are a real nuisance. He often receives comments about consistently wearing long attire, even in warmer weather. It doesn't matter if it's the middle of the afternoon in July, his button-down keeps him from shivering at the very mention of a crisp summer breeze. Even when he was a child and the temperature just threatened to drop, he would bundle himself up so tightly in his coat and scarves (yes, scarves. Plural.) that it was almost difficult to breathe, just to make the five minute walk to his private lessons. In body, mind, and heart, Byakuya Togami is ice.

His boyfriend's laughter across the room catches his attention. The girl just made a joke, and they're laughing together like children. Byakuya's blood runs cold.

And it startles him.

Makoto Naegi is always warm. He's content in cold rooms and sweats when the temperatures are high. His hugs, his smile, his laugh, every last bit of him radiates heat and pulsates with a glowing passionate energy. In many ways, he's thawed the ice cold heart of the Togami heir. He loves his boyfriend, and seeing Makoto happy never fails to make his heart melt. He tells him often that his happiness is of utmost importance to him, and he isn't lying. The mere sight of Makoto's smile is enough to get the heir through even the most difficult days.

So why is seeing him happy now such a painful sight? Why does seeing him laugh so genuinely sting so harshly? His childlike expression like a knife slicing through his stomach. His hand on her shoulder to balance himself creating a sensation akin to being swallowed in ice water.

I hate her.

Well, that's an awfully harsh thought, and one that Byakuya isn't even sure is true. He doesn't think he hates her, she's never done anything to him to elicit any real disdain. So why did that thought cross his mind? She's a very nice girl, and has always been a wonderful friend to Makoto. They've known each other for years, even before Hope's Peak.

She had a crush on him.

She's pretty enough, her long blue hair and sparkling eyes may very well be appealing to those attracted to women. Her appearance is certainly becoming of a teen idol. Her smile is warm like Makoto's, but somehow not quite as genuine. There's always a hint of falseness to it, one that few have been able to see past. Is that why? Because she isn't one hundred percent genuine? That can't be it, Byakuya himself isn't a beacon of honesty. He rarely encounters anyone who is, Makoto aside. It's likely the product of being in the public eye, she's accustomed to putting on a facade for the public. Byakuya can attest to that particular burden. But perhaps, it's because her smile does seem mostly genuine, and the way she grabs Makoto's hands in excitement feels honest.

It doesn't matter. He has no need to be analyzing this situation in the first place. The fact that he's spent so long watching this encounter is pathetic. These strange feelings likely have no meaning and are just the byproduct of not enough sleep or too much stress. It's a waste of time and he really should just walk away and-

She kissed his cheek.

She.

Kissed.
