"Shuichi...? Are you okay? You look really bothered," You tried to snap the male's attention from whatever dark place his mind was in. He gave you a delayed reaction, wiping his eyes with the sleeve of his coat before turning to look at you. You could see that he'd wiped away tears because his cheeks and eyes were wet {though he had tried to smear his tears away}. Your eyes widened at the sight.

"I... I can't stop thinking of... them," Shuichi made a statement that made absolutely no sense to you. A bit worried, you carefully asked the only question you could think of.

"Who's them?" You tried to use as gentle of a tone as you could, not wanting to further upset Shuichi. He seemed to freeze up for a few seconds before giving a shaky sigh.

"...When I was in high school, I was put in a so-called killing game with fifteen other people. I watched my friends kill each other over and over, and then watched them get executed for their crimes... W-with Simon in the hospital, I can't stop thinking of all my friends who died... what if he dies too?" Shuichi explained what was on his mind, his expression making your heart melt with sympathy. He was trying so desperately to hold back tears, instead choosing to wipe them away with his sleeves. He also avoided all eye contact with you, which you assumed was a further attempt to hide his sorrow even as he vented.

You were stunned with the information he'd shared. How were you supposed to respond to that? How were you supposed to comfort him? It wasn't like you could bring back the people who died, and saying you were sorry it happened to him wouldn't really accomplish anything. However, if you didn't do anything, you just looked like an asshole. With no other idea on how to respond, you chose to embrace the detective gently, which startled him. He froze for several seconds before slowly reciprocating the gesture a bit clumsily.

"I know I can't really do anything about what happened to you, and I know that anything I say probably won't really make you feel any better... but I hope that one day you'll heal from your trauma. And I hope that Simon will be okay," You did your best to give comforting words. You knew it probably wouldn't mean much to him, but you still had to try to say something that would maybe help him feel even the tiniest bit better.

Shuichi didn't respond, but he relaxed a little more in the embrace.

You walked into the police station, feeling slightly overwhelmed by the strict, authoritative atmosphere. However, despite this atmosphere, there was nothing you could observe that could explain the atmosphere. You figured it was just because it was a police station that you felt this way. The lobby was cool and two receptionists sat behind a desk. A few people were quietly waiting, sitting in chairs placed off to the side for people to wait. The people waiting seemed to be a family with three kids, though their mom didn't seem to be there at that moment.

You walked to a receptionist, who asked you what you needed. You informed her that you were apparently expected, and she asked for your name. Once you told her your name, she typed it into a computer and confirmed that you were expected and that she'd notify somebody named 'Cody.' She then told you to take a seat while you waited, so you sat in the waiting area across from the family. One of the kids looked at you curiously, seeming shy. She had long hair that was down to her waist and appeared to be around ten years old. You politely smiled at the little girl, not wanting to scare her or anger her dad by talking to his kids without his permission.

At just the small gesture, she hid behind another girl who looked almost identical to her, who you assumed was her sister {maybe a twin}. A boy that was obviously their older brother started laughing and making fun of her, which made the little girl start to attack the boy! The dad quickly pulled them apart and scolded them both. Neither of the siblings seemed to care much about it, though, and even flipped each other off while he scolded them. The dad just scolded them more harshly for this.

The family continued the fighting and bickering for quite some time, the only one who didn't participate being the girl's sister who just looked disappointed in her own family. After a few more minutes of witnessing the dad fail miserably at getting his kids to obey, a police officer suddenly walked out with who you assumed was the kid's mom because she started talking to the kids. The officer then took one of the kids back with him, and you managed to catch, "...just in case the kids know anything about the murder," in the hushed conversation between the dad and the officer. Wait, what?

You were still stunned at what you'd heard when somebody in a lab coat walked into the lobby. It was a very tall man, and upon seeing you he smiled, "Ah, you must be (Y/N)."

"Yeah, that's me," You confirmed, standing up.

"Come back in the lab, we'll talk there. Don't wanna disturb the waiting room," the man chuckled a bit, motioning for you to follow him. You followed through a door and down a hallway lined with offices, all with somebody's name on the door. You even noticed that Shuichi had an office of his own! He didn't tell you he worked here! It did make sense since he was the Ultimate Detective, though.

The man lead you up a flight of stairs and through a door, which upon opening, revealed a large and neatly kept laboratory. You could feel your eyes lighting up as you looked around the expansive area, noticing that there were several people working. The boy lightly laughed at your expression, "Yeah, with that expression I'm pretty sure this is where you belong. Unfortunately, we still have to go through the hiring process though or HR will have our heads."

You couldn't help but smile as you left the lab. You now had a job that you would start tomorrow, and you felt genuinely excited to start. You were technically now officially a forensic scientist, which made you happy to think about.

However, once you entered the lobby, your happy moment was ruined by the absolute chaos the family from earlier was causing. Both the mom and the dad were absent, leaving the kids alone. The girl and the boy were shouting at each other, and the boy had several fresh bite marks on his arm that had clearly been caused by the girl. The girl had a busted lip and several fresh wounds of her own. The sister was far away from the two of them in a corner, trying to drown out their fighting with a DS game on full volume. You couldn't believe that not a single person was trying to split up the siblings!

You rushed to the siblings that were fighting, physically pushing them apart from each other, "Both of you stop right now!!"

The girl screamed as soon as you touched her, fear evident in her eyes, "SHE'S GONNA KILL ME!! SOMEBODY HELP ME!!"

The boy screamed at the girl to shut up and tried to slap her, but you stopped him before he could.

"I'm not going to hurt anybody. Tell me where your parents are," You demanded at the kids. Neither the boy or the girl answered you. The girl seemed too scared to speak and was hiding under a chair, while the boy just crossed his arms and looked away from you, "Well, if you two won't behave and you won't tell me where your parents are, then I'm staying here until they get here."

You didn't have to wait long because their mom came storming out of the bathroom, scolding the kids because she could hear them screaming while she was using the bathroom. Not wanting to get involved in the family's business, you started to leave, though the mom shouted a 'thank you for trying to watch the kids' as you left. You sighed. That entire family was a nightmare.

As you walked outside, you noticed that Shaun was about to enter the building, holding a folder full of many papers- and the folder had Henry's name written on it in very evenly spaced writing that was almost too neat. What was he doing here with papers presumably from Henry?

"Oh, hey Shaun. What are you doing here?" You asked, genuinely surprised to see him here of all places.

"Etwas," Shaun responded in a foreign language.

"I don't speak whatever language that was," You awkwardly commented, which caused him to snicker.

"I know you don't speak German, genius," Shaun rolled his eyes, walking past you before you could respond to him. He was about to enter the building when the family walked out, the siblings both with their arms crossed as they were clearly upset about something. At the sight of them, he turned pale and almost dropped the folder as his hands began to tremble, "Th-that... what the fuck...?"

"What's wrong? Do you know that family or something?" You asked. Shaun didn't respond for several seconds as he took a few steps back.

"I-I wasn't seeing it then?! They really walked by?!" Shaun suddenly whirled his attention in your direction. Unsure of why it was such a big deal, you confirmed that he wasn't seeing things when he saw the family walk by. Immediately his eyes grew wide, "B-but that doesn't make any sense! ...Wait..."

Shaun suddenly glared at you before hastily walking inside, ignoring anything you tried to say in an attempt to make him explain what was going on. What the hell was that all about?

As soon as Shaun was out of sight and inside the building, you noticed the family suddenly taking off wigs, all of them laughing and saying something about being the Ultimate Imitators. Did somebody play some kind of cruel joke on Shaun or something...?
