                  Chapter One

“The water is liquid.”

“Ok, what the hell was that?”

“I’m trying to connect with water!”

“By saying it’s liquid? It makes you sound stupid.”

“Ok, do you have any better ideas?”

It was a beautiful and sunny day. Shikamaru and I were by the water. I was crouched down next to it with my hands sticking inside. I was trying to learn some sort of new jutsu and I figured I’d learn a water-style one. The problem was, I had no idea how to do that or if I even had any affinity or anything for it. I just knew that I could walk on it but that was pretty much the basic.

“I still have no idea why you wanna learn a water jutsu,” Shikamaru said and yawned. “I mean, you have eyes that can blow people up! How many jutsu do you need?”

“You know I hate using that power because it only makes me weak and drains my chakra.”

“Then you have all your snakes and fire balls.”

“In comparison to you, you don’t even have any-“

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence! Bad enough I have to sit out here in the blazing sun, watching you talk to water all day.”

“No one asked you to be here.”

“Yes. You did.”

“I get bored too easily.”

“That makes two of us. Now how much longer are you going to make me watch you watch the water or are you actually going to try anything?”

“How can I try anything if I don’t even know anything?”

“Then why are we wasting time here?”

I gave him an apologetic grin. “I thought that maybe I could connect with it and it’ll give me a hint on how to do things.”

“Fine, here’s a hint,” he said and kicked me. I fell head-first into the water and for a few seconds I was so angry I felt like giving him the sense that I’d drowned. But knowing I couldn’t hold my breath forever, I swam back up again.

“You’re a dead man!”

“What? I was trying to unite you with water. Plus, your senses are really weak. What’s going on?”

I climbed back out and unbraided my hair. It had grown down to my bellybutton already. I gave it a twist and a whole lot of water splashed to the ground. “Do you have any idea how dirty this water is? I’m gonna have to wash my hair again and that takes hours to get it into shape!”

“I do apologize about your womanly problems but I’m still not gonna drop it. What’s going on?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“The hell! Normally, you would’ve intercepted my kick but you were really out of it. And don’t give me that “I was bonding with water” bullshit.”

“It’s nothing you need to concern yourself about. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to change into something dry.”

“Ok, ok, I’ll buy you ramen to make it up for this.”

“Apology accepted.”

As we headed towards town, I suddenly remembered something. “God dammit!”

“Oh god, what now?”

“I just remembered about the washing-machine accident.”

“You mean the one where you mixed the whites with the reds and everything, even the reds, turned out pink?”
