It was dark.I was cutting up some vegetables and making food.
"Mm, that smells so good." Charlie said.
My phone rang, showing a name and picture of who was calling me.
"Oh, it's your boo!" Charlie walked over to the table with my phone on it. "Should I?"
"Sure. Put it on speaker." I told her.
"Okay." Charlie accepted the call and put it on speaker.
"Hey, Vurb!" She said.
"Hey, it's both of us!" I said, in the background.
"Hey, hey, guys. Charlie, do you mind if I just talk to Zak alone for a second?" Vurb asked.
"Uh, I'm cooking, what's up?" I asked.
"Uh, I, you uhm.. You sure we can't talk alone?" Vurb said.
"Uh no, what's going on?" I asked him.
"Did you know that a client of yours was murdered?" Vurb would ask.
I looked up at Charlie, who mouthed an 'Oh my god' at me.
"And along with some guy in Encino, and both are connected to your landlady?" Vurb asked.
"..You think Niki did all that?" I responded.
"No, no, Niki was cleared this morning, um.. Do you- Do you know anything about this?" Vurb asked.
I shook my head. "I mean, how would I know anything about it? A reporter's only as good as their sources, and if you're just finding out about it, how am I supposed to-"
"No, no." Vurb said. "Zak, no I'm not, I'm not talking.. I'm not talking about your reporting. Um.."
I suspected he was getting suspicious of me. "What're you talking about?"
"Okay, this is not funny, Vurb." Charlie cut in.
"Charlie, I'm talking to Zak for a minute, please."
I started cutting the vegetables faster. "Don't worry about it, Char."
"No, Zak, look. They've got prints."
Knife cutting fast..
"They've got prints, Zak, I really-"
"Charlie." I said.
Charlie shrugged at me, holding the phone.
"Are you listening?" Vurb asked. He sounded a little upset, pissed off.
"Zak! Are you listening!?" Vurb asked, on the phone.
I felt the knife slice my finger. "Fuck!"
Charlie quietly gasped. "You okay? What's going on?"
I walked around the table, holding my hand.
"Shit. Bye, Vurb." Charlie said. She hung up on the call.
"What happened?" She asked, as I hurried past her.
I knocked over a lamp as I walked into the bathroom, ignoring her.
"You okay?" Charlie followed me into the bathroom.
Vurb held his phone. He sighed and walked a certain direction.
I opened the drawers and pulled out a bandage.
"Hey, what happened there?" Charlie asked, standing in the doorway.
