CHAPTER 5

The next morning I woke up exhausted. I couldn't get to sleep last night after the steamy events with Jake. I sluggishly turned my head to face the alarm clock and groaned when I saw the time; 10:30am. I had to be at work by 11. I dragged myself out of bed and changed into my white Rita's Water Ice t-shirt and pulled my hair into a simple ponytail. I did my usual wiggle-jump dance into my jeans and slipped on some old flip-flops. After dabbing some makeup on my face, I rushed out the door and started the few mile walk to work. My dad, I guessed, had the car at the moment, probably still asleep wherever he passed out drunk last night.

It was a little chillier out than usual today, so no one was really around to buy water ice. I just sat around as time droned on and dozed off every so often with my head in my hand, and served the occasional customer. Not soon enough, my shift was almost over and I was wiping down the sticky outside tables when I felt two large, warm hands cover my eyes.

"Guess who," the person's lips breathed in my ear. Of course I knew exactly who it was. The hands traveled to my waist and wrapped around me and pulled me close to the warm body on my back. He nuzzled his head into the crook of my neck.

"Mmm, you smell good," he said. I turned around and Jake was looking down at me with a cheeky grin.

"Hi." I said and continued wiping the table. I then walked to the Rita's stand and went behind the counter. Jake followed and met me on the other side.

"Can I help you?" I asked, trying to sound irritated.

"I'll order something, if you promise to share it with me." he teased.

I just rolled my eyes and started packing up. As I walked around the little booth putting away flavored syrups and Rita's cups, I could feel the eyes of the male still standing at the counter following me.

Getting annoyed, I turned and faced him and asked, "Is there any reason why you're here?"

"Well your mom told me you were probably here at work, and your shift is ending soon, so I thought I'd give you a ride home." he replied.

"My mom's home?" I questioned, a bit surprised. She had been on one of her many nursing trips to help people in war zones. I guess she was home early. And wait..... "You were at my house?"

"Yeah I was on my way to my friend Brendan's house when I noticed I passed yours on the way, and thought I'd say a quick hi to my girl." he replied like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"Oh well, I can walk home, you don't need to take me." I said as I started to walk in the direction of where I lived. The wind had noticeably picked up and I shivered slightly. But I wasn't cold for long before two muscular arms picked me up and carried me towards the parking lot. I looked up and Jake was looking straight ahead, his unruly hair whipping around his face. We stopped in front of what I guessed would be his car. He put me down and I looked around but only saw a glistening black motorcycle.

"Where's your car?"

"Well today, I rode my bike," he said as he handed me a helmet.

He climbed on and motioned for me to sit behind him. I had never ridden on one of these before. I shyly put my hands on the back part of Jake's hips. He sighed as he reached back and pulled my arms forward so my hands connected in front of him and I was pressed against his back.

"Jesus, you're shivering." he said after seeing my goose bumps. He took off his sweat jacket and gave it to me, revealing his skin tight black shirt. I gratefully pulled it on and instantly felt warm. The jacket smelled like him. I wrapped my arms around his torso. He kicked off and started driving.

We cruised down the street and an exhilarating rush of adrenaline shot through me. Even with the helmet on, my hair still managed to escape and fly behind me in the wind. All of a sudden we sped up, causing me to tighten my grip around Jake. I felt the vibrations of a low chuckle run down his middle. I was disappointed when we got back to my house so soon, but kind of had a feeling I would be doing that again sometime in the near future.

I was walking up the driveway when out of nowhere I was being enveloped into a hug by my mother. I hug her back, it felt nice to feel her soft embrace again. She pulled away and I noticed that with her short reddish hair and tall height, she still looked the same as when I last saw her three months ago. We were doing all the usual 'how are you' and 'I missed you' stuff when she said, "But Ange, you haven't told me about your new boyfriend!" she exclaimed, clearly referring to Jake who was still standing behind me.

"He's not my-"

"Nice to meet you Mrs. Fisher, I'm Jake. Honestly, I thought you were Angela's older sister when I was here earlier." He stuck out his hand and offered a cute, dimply smile.

"Oh please, you must be joking," mom laughed.

It took everything I had not to burst out laughing at how Jake was trying to charm my mom, and how it was working.

"Swear to God," he said and winked at me.

"Well lets all go inside, it's really cold out here," mom said as she brought us in the house.

We all went in and mom said to go to the kitchen and she'd get us something to eat. Jake just strutted in and plopped himself on one of our rolly kitchen chairs.

"This is a beautiful house you got here, Mrs. Fisher." Jake admired as he took a sip of the hot chocolate my mom gave him.

"Thanks honey, and call me Patty." she said and turned to make me some cocoa. This was all so weird, having Jake over my house, meeting my mom and casually drinking hot cocoa at my table. I didn't know what to say.

Then Jake's phone buzzed from the back pocket of his charcoal-grey jeans. He pulled it out and I watched as his brow furrowed while reading a text message. I wondered what it was about. He slowly got up and said, "Sorry Angela, but I have to run, I have some stuff to take care of that I forgot about."

My mom waved, still facing the stove, "Bye Jake, nice meeting you!"

I turned to walk him out. He opened the door and paused.

"I like your mom. Sorry I had to leave like this."

"Where are you going, anyway?" I asked, curious.

"Nowhere you need to worry about, Princess. See you real soon." He leaned down and kissed me lightly on the lips before he left. I was expecting him to kiss me, and for some reason, that time I didn't try to stop him.
