CHAPTER 6
The rest of the weekend breezed by. I hadn’t really done anything except catch up on last minute math homework and went to my other job. Yes, I did have a second job, I worked at the local gym, Planet Fitness.
But much to my despair, Monday morning rolled itself around way too quickly. I sluggishly combed my messy hair and decided to let the natural curls fall around my face. I pulled on some jeans and a loose long-sleeved white v-neck. I smeared on some foundation, but didn’t even bother with any other eye makeup besides eyeliner today. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
Before I descended down the stairs, I glanced out the large window that was placed above my front door and huffed in annoyance when I saw mom had taken the car out already. Guess she was going to be gone all day as usual when she was home.
Heading out the door, I passed my dad and rolled my eyes at the sight of him passed out on the couch, still holding his Tablet and beer bottle from the night before. I really didn’t feel like taking the bus with the freaks that rode it daily, so I called Alaina to see if she could swing by and pick me up if she hadn’t already left, which she hadn’t.
I lightly kicked at the little pebbles dotting my front sidewalk with my Tasman’s while I waited. I pushed the loose strands of hair out of my face that were being blown around by the slight breeze. Then I heard the noisy clunk of Alaina’s boxy golden Pathfinder turning onto my road. The old vehicle came to a stop in front of me and I climbed in. Khia’s “My Neck, My Back” was blaring from the speakers and Alaina’s off pitch scream-singing was filling up the car. We jolted forward and quickly picked up speed as she carelessly drove down the street. As usual, she was talking bubbly about random things, and I wondered how she could be so awake this early in the morning. I tuned her out like I did every morning.
Surprisingly we got to school in one piece. The first half of the day went by much too slow of course, and I was thankful to finally get to lunch. I purchased my Lemonade Vitamin Water Zero, goldfish, and pretzel and made my way to where my friends Alaina, Sarah, and her boyfriend Jared and I sat this period. I plunked down next to Sarah and listened in on there conversation, trying to pick up on it. They were arguing about which of Liam Payne’s hairstyles looked best on him. I’d pass on that convo.
I glanced around the lunchroom to see what other annoying people were doing that I could laugh at and my gaze fell on a certain messy-haired male who was watching me. I uncomfortably looked away and turned back to my friends. I had completely forgotten about Jake since I last saw him. Shyly, I peaked over my shoulder and watched as he got up from where he ate with his friends Brendan, Kevin, Matt, Darrian, and some other creepy guys I didn’t know, and sauntered over to where I was.
He sat in the seat to my left and wrapped his massive arm around my waist.
“Hey, beautiful.”
“Er….hi-” I stuttered.
Everyone at my table abruptly stopped their chatting and stared wide-eyed at the person who was now possessively embracing me. He didn’t seem to mind, probably used to odd looks from people. Jared tensed, ready to jump in if Jake unpredictably tried anything weird.
“What do you say you go out with me tonight. My friends and I are having a bonfire for Matt’s birthday.” he said casually.
“I can’t, I have work this evening.” For once I was glad I had work.
“Don’t worry, we’ll be going late, maybe around 11.” Damn, my shift ended at 10.
“Well, I…uh…” I started, but couldn’t think of another excuse. Jake’s mouth quirked into an amused grin.
“So I’ll just pick you up from work then. Don’t worry, it’ll be fun.” he assured and kissed my cheek, lingering by my ear. “I like the mark that’s still visible on your neck. Just reminds me of how sexy and innocent you are.” he purred. He pushed out his chair and strolled back over to his table. I looked down at my collarbone and mentally slapped myself when I saw I forgot to put makeup on the bruise he gave me in my entryway .
“What was that about?” Sarah asked.
“He wants to take me out again tonight. To a bonfire.”
Alaina snorted, “Good luck with that.”
