I wake up in the middle of the night panting. I had dreamt of someone screaming, and then a flash of green light.
"Harriette?" I call to my wife. "Are you okay?"
I wait a few seconds, but she doesn't reply. I switch on the lamp on my nightstand and look at Harriette. Then I scream. Her eyes are wide open and her mouth curved in shock. I stare into her dark brown eyes and put my hands over her heart waiting, praying for any kind of movement. But nothing comes. She's dead.
I run upstairs, thinking of our daughter, Eleonora.
I burst into her bedroom only to find an empty bed. I break down in tears. As I run my hands along her bed, I feel a piece of paper stuck between the covers. I lift them and find a note.
"Meet me at the cemetery at midnight tomorrow night if you ever want to see your daughter again."
I pull back the blinds, looking for any sign of who left the note, took Eleonora, and killed Harriette.
All I see is the tip of a cloak going around the corner.
