When Steve reached the roof, he saw Baylor looking out over the city, dangerously close to the edge as she leaned on one of the many glass panels that surrounded the giant balcony. He slowly approached the crying girl.
"Hey it's me, Steve. How about you step away, you're a bit close to the edge."
"I want to be."
"What do you mean?"
"I want to be close to the edge. I want to end this torturous life. I can't take it anymore Steve. They're always there in the back of my mind."
He didn't know what to say so he slowly took a few steps closer. "Once you jump you're going to regret it. You have a dad who cares about you and all of us to help you through it."
"He probably doesn't even want me. Who would want a daughter that wants to kill herself? I'm a monster."
"Baylor you are many things but a monster is not one of them." His tone became more serious as the sentence went on.
"You don't know what it's like to have them haunting you, torturing you from the inside out, SLOWLY RIPPING YOU APART! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND STEVE." She broke down again and started to climb to the other side.
"NO!"
She jumped.
Steve broke the glass and grabbed her hand just as she was about to slip away. He pulled her back up and carried her away from the ledge. He stayed outside so she could have some air, but held her tight, not daring to loosen his grip.
He pulled her onto his lap and let her cry into his chest as she curled into a ball.
"I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking. You're right, as soon as I jumped I regretted it."
"Hey it's okay little one. You're safe. You know, your dad went through all of this too? When he brought you here, you were the only reason he stayed on this earth. But you have more than just him to be here for. You have all of us. Everyone in this tower. We'll help you through it. Don't worry."
She sighed and cried into his chest for another few minutes before Steve felt her breathing slow. He carefully stood up and carried Baylor back downstairs, her sleeping body relaxing onto his shoulder and into his arms.
When he got back to the living room he quietly addressed everyone. "Peter, I want you to take her to her room and stay with her for tonight. Make sure she doesn't leave." He paused. "I don't really know how to phrase this...umm...Tony, I broke one of the panels on the balcony trying to catch her after she jumped."
Everyone gasped quietly being careful not to wake her and looked at the girl, now in Peter's arms. Steve could tell they all saw her as a little girl right now, clinging to Peter like her life depended on it. They all clearly felt sorry and Peter nodded before bringing Baylor to her room.
As soon as they heard the elevator doors close, everyone bombarded Steve with questions and it took him almost an hour to answer them all.
"Why do our relaxing times never end well?" Tony commented once Steve was done explaining.
"I don't know Tony. I don't know," he replied sorrowfully.
Peter's Point of View
He brought Baylor into her room and carefully laid her on her bed. He softly closed the door and walked back over to her. Slowly but surely he took off the combat boots she was wearing and placed them next to her bed. Next he flipped back the covers on the half of the bed she wasn't laying on, picked up her limp body and set it back down on the sheets. He covered her with her comforter and then walked over to the couch to settle in for the night.
