The four of them walked over to the billiard table and Bonnie placed the opened encyclopedia on it, before Kai let a drop of his blood fall on where the map showed Portland.

The smell of Kai's blood in the air made it hard for Sam to control her vampirism. After five months of drinking blood from old blood bags, even the smell of fresh blood made her mind go crazy.

Kai seemed to have noticed, because he suspiciously raised his eyebrows at her. Sam turned around and tried to get her instincts under control while Bonnie mumbled some weird witch spell, trying to locate the ascendant's whereabouts.

"Phasmatos Tribum, Nas Ex Veras, Sequitas Sanguinem," Bonnie said repeatedly. Her and Kai were staring at the blood on the map, waiting for it to move, while Damon was making paper planes out of a newspaper and threw them into the backyard.

"It doesn't feel right. Maybe I need a bigger map," Bonnie said, looking cluelessly down at the blood. Damon came back into the room and dropped the rest of the newspaper on the table in front of him. "Maybe you're just out of practice and you suck at magic now."

Bonnie gave Damon a deadly stare. "Ignore him," Kai interfered, having noticed Bonnie's reaction. "Pretend he's a white-noise machine. That's how I used to tune out my siblings. I grew up with a ton of little sisters and brothers. You know, all of them constantly yammering."

Sam turned back around to face them, after finally getting her instincts under control, and saw Kai taking a step closer to Bonnie.

"But it taught me how to focus," he explained, almost whispering, in a deep and low voice, looking down at her and staring directly into her eyes. A slight rush of jealousy came over her, something about this made her feel weird, even though she still hadn't decided how to feel about the new guy.

"Easy there, big brother!" Damon said and poured himself some Bourbon in a glass. "She doesn't know you. At least buy her a drink," he added in a sarcastic tone. Bonnie rolled her eyes at him before looking back at the map to continue working on the spell.

Kai on the other hand smiled at Sam - a challenging, almost cheeky one, like he had been testing her reaction - before he too looked back at the map.

"The spell is moving towards Virginia. That can't be right," Kai mumbled, his eyes following the red line of blood moving over the paper. Sam came closer to the billiard table to take a look at it herself. She didn't knew a lot about magic but she knew that Bonnie was usually never wrong.

"Mm-mm, the spell's working. It's showing me Mystic Falls. It feels so...
close," Bonnie said, turned at Kai and moved her hand near his chest. "It's right here."

The second Bonnie's hand touched his chest, the candles around them began to lighten up and flicker unsteadily.

Kai gasped ironically. He didn't seem to be surprised at all. "Very good," he said and pulled something out of his jacket pocket. Something that looked exactly like the weird thing he was working on earlier. Just older and made of iron.
