Arriving at school late, I quickly rush to my locker and unpack my bag, collecting my books for health class. I open the door and take my seat. Luckily class hasn't started yet. I unpack my belongings and place them on the table.
"Okay, class." My teacher turns to face us. "Today we'll be starting a new unit; the Baby Project."
If my jaw could physically drop to the floor, it would have at that moment. Sighs and words of complaint sound around the classroom.
"Alright children, let's get you into your pairs." People begin to pair up, but the teacher cuts in. "I'll be choosing." More groans sound from the class as the teacher picks up her lists and starts reading off names. I zone out until I hear, "Lia Byrne?" I look up at the teacher expectantly. "Lia, you will be assigned with Harry for the Baby Project." I look up to the back of the room and see Harry's green eyes staring at me. He smiles, but I know that is only for show because, on the inside, he really couldn't care less.
The teacher finishes reading the names and tells us to grab a toy baby from the front of the class and get into our pairs. I grab a baby and walk over to Harry, still sitting in his seat at the back of the classroom. I smile, and he motions for me to sit in the seat next to him.
"So, I was thinking, maybe we--" He cuts me off with his hand and shakes his head. Did I do something wrong? Wait, why would I even care what Harry thinks?
"We've never really spoken before. Let me start." Oh, right. I smile and nod for him to continue. "Hi, my name is Harry Edward Styles, and you are?" Wait, he doesn't know my name? We've only been in the same class for three years. I think he sees the confusion on my face because he quickly responds, "I know your name, Lia. I'm just trying to be polite." I release the breath I found myself holding.
"Hi, Harry..." He raises his eyebrows at me and I giggle. Wait, since when did I giggle at Harry Styles? "...Edward Styles." I continue. "I'm Lia Grace Byrne." He nods and puts out his hand, which I shake. This Baby Project might not turn out so bad after all. We turn to the desk and start writing down possible baby names, which we mostly agree on. The class finishes and the teacher calls us all back together.
"Okay, class. You will have to spend the next week with your partner; recess, lunch, lessons you have together, after school when you aren't busy, and take care of your baby. Remember to write everything down in your care log. Off you go." I look at Harry worriedly, but he just turns to me and smiles. I couldn't help but notice the dimples in his cheeks. Lia, stop it. He's just your health partner. An extremely hot health partner. Oh my god, stop it.
"Are you alright?" Harry's husky voice brings me back to reality.
"Wait, what, w-why would you ask that?" I stutter.
"You were kinda staring at me." He replies and stands up, pushing his chair in. He grabs the baby and cradles it in one arm. I try to stand up but my legs turn to jelly at his gentleness and I fall to the ground. I laugh it off and look up at him, his hand out to help me up. I place my hand in his and he pulls me upright. The muscles in his arm flexed as he did this. "Are you alright?" He asks. I nod shyly and take the baby from him, accidentally touching his arm in the process. Accidently. "So, I was thinking we could catch up after school and look after the baby together?"
"Okay, sounds good to me," I reply. "Do you want to take it home tonight?"
"It? It! Did you just call poor little Genevive it?" Genevive. Didn't I suggest that name?
"How do you know it's a girl? They can be whatever they want to be." I retort. He puts his hands up in surrender.
"Okay, what about Bailey? That's a gender-neutral name."
"Sure." I nod. "See you after school then." I turn to walk away, but he puts his hand on my shoulder and turns me back around. Butterflies flutter in my chest.
"Woah, woah, woah. Wait a sec. Didn't the teacher say we have to spend recess, lunch, lessons we have together with each other to take care of the baby?" This isn't gonna be good for my mental health.
"Ugh, yes." I mumble.
"Then we have to spend the whole day together." He replies simply. I don't get a chance to reply because he's already linked arms with me and headed out of the classroom.
