Meredith lies in bed, unable to move. Just 6 months ago, she lost the love of her life, Derek Shepherd, in a car accident in Washington DC. He died before she could get there from Seattle. 3 months after he died, she found out she was pregnant with his baby. Her best friend and person Cristina Yang had flown out from Switzerland the second she heard the news, and has been in Seattle since.
Meredith's POV: I lie in bed. Our bed. The one that Derek and I shared. His side is empty, and cold, like the part of my heart that belonged to him. The only reason I haven't slit my wrists to get back to him is because of our children. I know they would be okay if I died, because of my family, both biological and chosen, but I haven't ended it because there is another child inside of me. The last thing Derek gave to me. I keep fighting for her. It's what Derek would want me to do. But still, when I make dinner, as I cut up food, I always think about just cutting my carotid artery. The pain gone in seconds. I get out of bed, and walk into the kitchen, out of my bedroom for the first time in a week, where my best friend Cristina Yang sits, drinking coffee. My kids are already at school. Preschool for Bailey and 1st grade for Zola. "Hey Mer," Cristina says as she stands up and helps my to the table. I am weak because I only eat what is necessary for my baby's health. Cristina hands me some food, eggs and cereal, and I eat. She hands me a glass of water, and I drink. I feel the baby start to kick, and I instinctively place my hand over where she is kicking. I smile for the first time in months, and Cristina smiles back at me pitifully. Just then, I hear a knock at the door, and Cristina answers it. "Is this the residence of Dr. Meredith Grey?" a uniformed police officer says. "That would be me," I say, as I walk up to the door. The last time a police officer came to my house... no I can't think about that. "It is about your husband, Dr. Derek Shepherd. He is alive," a different officer says. I gasp, and fall to the ground unconscious.
Cristina's POV: As soon as Mer hit the floor, I rushed over to her and called the ambulance. The police officers came over as well. "I should be okay by myself. I am a surgeon, and the ambulance should be here soon." I say. "Can you meet us at Grey Sloan Memorial and give her the details? I think she is in shock." "Yes," a police officer says. They walk off, and drive off. I check her pulse. "Steady," I say to myself. I have a pen light, and I flash it across her eyes. "Equal and reactive," The ambulance will be here soon. Mer starts to wake up, and I help her over onto the couch. "Did.... did they say Derek is alive?" Mer says. "Yeah," I say smiling. "They did," She smiles, and sits up. "I called the ambulance. We are going to take you to Grey Sloan, and they can check you out. You seem fine, but we still need to make sure, especially because of the baby," I say. "Fine," Mer says. "I can tell Amelia while we are there, too," she says. The ambulance pulls up, and I direct them inside to where Mer is sitting on the couch. We get her onto the gurney, and into the rig, and they place an oxygen mask on her face as a precaution. We pull up to the emergency bay, where Miranda Bailey is waiting for us with a wheelchair. "Is it true?" she asks me. "Yeah," Mer says. "Derek is alive." Miranda smiles, and wheels her inside, and I follow closely behind. Amelia is in the pit, and when she sees Mer, she runs over. "Oh my god, Meredith are you okay?" she says. "Yeah, I just passed out," Mer says. "The police came to my house and told me Derek is alive, and then I passed out," Tears start building in Amelia's eyes. "That is not a funny joke," she says. Mer smiles. "I am not joking," she says. Amelia clasps her hand over her mouth and starts to cry.
Amelia's POV: Derek is alive. My big brother, who I grieved over, and put into the ground, is alive. I sit next to Mer, and I sob. Police officers walk up to Mer. "Not right now," Cristina says. "She will be ready to talk in a few minutes. Give her time to get examined and process." They back off, and Mer's exam turns out normal. "I told you I was fine," Mer says. We bring the police officers back, and I wipe my eyes. "I am Lieutenant Garcia," one of them says. "Dr. Shepherd is currently still in Washington. His death was faked. A person involved in his study faked his death for unknown purposes, and he was kidnapped. He was able to escape a week ago, and we were able to get the story directly from him. He is getting on a plane in a few hours, and the case will resume here. He should be here by 7 a.m. tomorrow," she says. Oh my god. I can see Derek again. I can only imagine how Mer is feeling. I grasp her hand in mine, and see her rubbing her belly, smiling.
The Next Morning
Meredith's POV: I awake to a knocking at the door. I run as fast as I can, and I open the door. Derek is standing there smiling his signature McDreamy grin. I throw myself into his arms, and I stand there and hug him. He kisses my lips, and I let go. "I missed you so much Mer," he says. I kiss him again as tears roll down my cheeks. "I thought of you, and Zola and Bailey every second," he says. "There is someone else for you to be thinking about now," I say, and he sees my pregnant stomach for the first time. "Oh my god Meredith, we're having another baby?" he asks, as tears of his own start flowing. "Yeah," I say. "I don't know if I could live in a world where this girl would never meet her father, so I am so glad you got kidnapped," He laughs, and places a hand on my stomach. We walk inside, and he walks into Zola and Bailey's room. I hear a gasp. "Daddy!" Zola yells. He picks up Bailey. "Daddy!" He says. Derek walks out, holding Zola and Bailey. Just then, Amelia, who had been living with us as well, walks out of her room, awakened by the commotion. "Derek?" She says in disbelief. She runs over to him, and tackles him to the couch. He laughs. "I missed you too Amy," he says. She punches him in the chest. "I thought you were dead!" She says between sobs. Cristina walks out as well, surveying the room. "Hey McDreamy," she says. "Cristina!" Derek says. "Did you come all the way from Switzerland just for me?" "Of course not," she says. "I came for Mer." She stands next to me, and squeezes my shoulder. I laugh. "I am glad you are alive however," she says. For the rest of the day, we all sit with Derek, filling him on our world.
