A week later
Derek's POV: Mer and I are going back to work today. I was offered my old position under Amelia. She went back a few days ago. She had been back at work for the most part, but she took time off when I came back. I wake Mer up with a kiss on the lips, and she smiles before opening her eyes, and I help her sit up. She is almost 7 months pregnant now, and she has finally been sleeping again. She uses me as a human body pillow, but I don't mind. I missed too much, and I am happy with just being able to be in the same bed as her again. I slide out of bed, and I lean down and hug Mer into a standing position. I have a feeling she can do it herself, but I love her, so I do everything I can possibly do to make life easier for her. We walk into the kitchen after getting Zola and Bailey up, and I pour muesli for myself and Bailey. He has taken after me, and enjoys a healthier breakfast. Zola and Meredith eat pumpkin muffins that they baked last night together, and we all sit together and eat as a family. "Okay kids, off to school!" Mer says, and we load them up into Mer's car. We drive to their schools, and drop them off. We then drive to the hospital. Mer takes a deep breath. She hasn't been back to work since I "died". We step out of the car, and walk into the hospital, her hand tightly grasping mine.
Meredith's POV: I walk through the doors of the hospital, and as I get onto the elevator with Derek. We stop on the next floor, and Bailey walks in. She smiles as she sees us. "I am very glad that you are not dead Shepherd," She says, and she hugs him. "And Grey, I am also happy to see you back at the hospital as a doctor instead of as a patient," "Wait, Mer, did you have to go to the hospital?" Derek says. "Yeah, after I heard you were alive, I passed out, and Cristina forced me to come. I was fine Derek," I say, as I give Bailey a look that says, 'Really? You had to tell him?' We step out of the elevator, and Bailey, Derek and I walk to the attendings lounge. We walk in, and there are balloons taped to everything. There is also a banner that reads 'Welcome Back Shepherd and Grey'. People blow party horns, and we see cupcakes. People swarm us, and I see Alex, Cristina, Maggie and Amelia in a corner. I slip out of the crowd, and sit next to them Alex hands me a chocolate cupcake with yellow frosting, and I accept it as I sit next to them. "Wow," I say as I take a bite of the cupcake. "Quite a party," "Yeah," Cristina says. "Arizona organized it," "No shit," Amelia says. "Maggie helped," There are bright, happy balloons everywhere. "No shit! This is a job only the bright and shiny people could've pulled off." I say. "Hey, I'm a surgeon, I can't be that happy and bright," Maggie says. "Sure," Alex says. "You are a dark and twisty person, who, like Mer, would ask the shooter to shoot them instead. Or, like Cristina, in a plane crash, you would just look for your shoe. Or like Mer, Cristina and me, tequila is your best friend. Sorry Amelia." "Oh no it's fine," Amelia says. "Maggie, maybe you are like me, and got hooked on pills as a teenager, because you watched your dad get shot when you were 5." We are all joking, but we have a point. We all are super fucked up. I start laughing, my mouth full of cupcake. One by one, they join in, and we end up gasping for breath as we laugh. Derek is not surrounded by people anymore, and for a second, he looks for me, before I stand up and walk over to him. "Sorry, I have to go. My husband misses me," I joke. I walk over to him, and he kisses the top of my head somewhat absently. Like a reflex. "You good?" I ask him. "Yeah, yeah," he says, and I hand him a cupcake. He takes a bite, and he walks back with me to my people. We spend a few more minutes just talking, and catching up, and then we actually go to work. Being surgeons. Saving lives. I only take a few easy cases. An appendectomy, and a consult on a patient with a cirrhotic liver. I spend some time in the pit, and before I know it, my day is over, and I am back home, pushing my kids on the swing with Derek. "What did you do today?" I ask him. "I scheduled a basic brain tumor removal, and I mostly did consults and tagged along with Amy," he says. "You?" "Oh, just an appy, and consults. Very uneventful," We take the kids inside, and eat some takeout from a Chinese place close to the hospital. After Zola and Bailey fall asleep, Derek and I watch Below Deck, a guilty pleasure show he watched while he was locked up. "I would think you would want nothing to do with anything that happened there," I say. "Me too, but this is addicting!" He says. I laugh, and I bury myself in his chest, as he puts his hand on my massive stomach. He did that a lot when I was pregnant with Bailey. It's like nothing changed since then. I fall asleep in his arms, and I wake up as he carries me bridal style to our room. He kisses my cheek as he sets me into the bed, and he lays next to me, and I fall asleep again with him next to me, our breathing in sync with each-other.
