She wasn't making a sound anymore and her breaths had grown steady while her body was limp against mine. I drew back slightly, looking down at her and finding her eyes softly shut as she slept. I carefully shifted my hold on her, bringing the side of her head on my shoulder as I gathered her up in my arms before getting to my feet.
"She's done," I said to Artie as he stood off to the side. "Deal with the rest on your own."
"Thank you," he replied in relief.
"I should have come with her in the first place," I uttered bitterly, turning around and walking towards the house.
A battered boy was running out the front door, heading towards me, and my guards instantly grabbed him before he could get any closer. He fought against their hold, yelling.
"What did you do to her?" he cried out. "Where are you taking her?"
I looked at him in confusion before glancing at Artie. "Did she take another one?" He pursed his lips, nodding. I sighed, shifting my arms underneath Angel and holding her closer as I walked towards the boy. "Shut up," I bit out in a quiet voice. "Your master is sleeping. If you wake her up, I'll make her throw you away."
He settled down, his eyes fixed on her with the same look of utter submission I saw in every person Angel possessed. But I noticed the slight difference it had with those who were truly devoted to her, not just because she manipulated them into it. Where they had unwavering resolve, this boy was broken down from the inside out and only had Angel holding him together, despite the fact that she was the one who'd broken him. It was a sickening reminder of the level of cruelty Angel was capable of and I walked away from him.
Jude was idling by the door, looking worried as he fidgeted on his feet. Angel's guards suddenly surrounded me when he approached, wielding their guns at him. Jude's guards did the same as they formed a wall around him, their guns aimed at Angel's guards. Then my own guards joined, aiming their guns at Jude's guards.
"What the hell?" I blurted out, shifting to turn Angel away from all the damned guns. "Are you people crazy?"
"Step away," Leonardo directed to Jude. "Or we'll drop you."
"I don't intend to harm my sister," Jude replied calmly. "I just need to see if she's okay."
"Step away," Leonardo repeated, taking a step closer until the muzzle of his gun was pressed against Jude's forehead. His guards shifted their aim on him. "Now, sir."
He clenched his jaw, glaring at him. "Thirdy, do something about them before I do."
"I don't have authority over any of them," I replied frantically. "Just do as they say."
"You dragged me out here to see her," he snapped, keeping his eyes on Leonardo. "I'm not going anywhere unless she tells me to so do something or figure out how you'll tell my wife you got me killed."
I glanced around, catching sight of Sawyer and Katrina coming up behind the walls of armed and highly combative men surrounding me. "Flint," I called out.
Sawyer came forward, assessing his team and the others. "Gentlemen, Miss Lastor needs immediate care. Lower your weapons and let Doctor Richardson pass." He glanced at Jude. "Sir, if you don't mind."
"I do," Jude answered back, standing firmly despite the gun against his head. "That's my sister. None of you have the right or authority to keep me away from her."
There was a deliberate clearing of throat behind us and I turned my head, seeing Trevor approaching. "Boy, ain't Kitten popular," he muttered before sucking on a cigarette. He glanced at me, smirking as he blew out the smoke. "Must drive you mental having so much competition, eh?" He stepped in between Leonardo and Jude, placing a hand on their backs respectively. "Now, fellas, we all love Kitten. She's the salt of the Earth and what not, but... Blue Eyes is in the line of fire. If y'all start shooting, he's bound to get nicked somewhere. I imagine Kitten won't fancy waking up to that at all."
