"So, why are you early?" Varin asks as he pours tea in your cup elegantly.

"Don't know..." you claim, checking on your sleeping companion for the millionth time.

"If you're so worried about him, lift the spell," he claims taking a seat opposite of you.

"And let him meet an atrocity like you... no thanks," you shift your gaze to your former 'student'.

"You wound me sensei~" he sings before sipping on the green tea he magically prepared in a matter of seconds.

"Spare me from your noise," you grunt eyeing your cup suspiciously.

"Oh come on sensei~ I promise I didn't poison your cup~" his voice causes you to physically cringe.

"Seriously just stop talking," you huff out, praying for a moment of silence... although the word praying does not suit your title.

"Hmmm," he pouts and crosses his arms over his chest. "Such a meanie..." he mumbles like a child.

After few moments of much needed silence, you remember why you're here.

"Hey Varin... what's up with the barrier request you put up in fairy tail?" you ask the man before you.

"Oh that..." his expression turns grim.

"You could have placed that barrier yourself... so why not do it?"

"It's because the townspeople believe me to be a non-magic user like them," he says and turns his face sideway.

"Non-magic users? For real?" you ask slightly surprised that there still exists people unable to use magic.

"It's not what you think sensei... these people... they have seen the wars and conflict magic has caused and decided to rid themselves of the title "mage"... they came to unite under my mansion. I do visit them occasionally, just to make sure they are doing okay and are faring well without magic".

"From the looks of it, they are managing just fine," you say to Varin and recall their expressions from earlier, "however, there seems something missing in them. I mean when you look in their eyes, you see total..."

"Emptiness," Varin finishes your sentence looking guiltily. You narrow your eyes at him, unease once again settling in the pit of your stomach.

"Varin... how long ago did these people come here?" you ask, partially dreading the accuracy of your intuition.

"..." he doesn't reply and shifts in his seat, clearly uncomfortable.

You frown at him, "don't tell me... they died didn't they? And the people down there are just empty shells... they have no souls".

He chuckles sadly, "as intelligent as ever".

"VARIN!" you yell at him, closing the distance between the two of you and grabbing him by the collar, "HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU NOT TO MESS WITH THESE THINGS?"

He places his hands on top of yours. The pained look in his eyes is one you are too familiar with. Varin speaks to you in a tone just above whisper, "what do you expect of me master? I don't go into wakeless sleep like you do... I have been living for the past five centuries... it hurts being lonely all this time!" his tone escalates further, he pushes you away and clutches his shirt just above his heart.

"I TRIED MASTER! I TRIED TO LIVE BY YOUR PRINCIPLES! BUT I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE! I RIPPED MY HEART OUT BUT MY BODY PULLED IT BACK IN AND REGENERATED WITHOUT SUSTAINING AN OUNCE OF DAMAGE! I TRIED FINDING MY TRUE LOVE BUT SHE RAN AWAY THE INSTANT SHE SAW MY TRUE FORM! I TRIED JOINING A GUILD BUT MY GUILDMATES WERE SO WEAK AND SHUT ME OUT BECAUSE OF MY STRONG POWERS! UNTIL THESE PEOPLE- these people" his voice breaks down, "they came to me and asked for shelter below my mansion... until HE came and killed them off. Claiming it was for fun... Acnologia killed the only family I had".

He falls to the ground, sobbing and shaking furiously. His grip tightening on his vest. You watch silently, allowing the avatar of annihilation to continue.

"I couldn't bear to see them dead so I used one of the forbidden spells and resurrected their bodies... However, their memories of me were erased in the process and I became invisible to them. The way they behave now is the way I remember..."

"So they are somewhat projections of your memories..." you conclude. He looks up at you with teary eyes and freezes in place. Your eyes... they are devoid of any emotions...

"Master?" he calls out to you.

"What have you done Varin?" your voice breaks, sadness rapidly fills your eyes bringing along tears. "The curse of..." you choke on your words.

"I know master... but that's okay. As long as I remain away from mortals, they should be safe..." he says, smiling sadly at you. The curse you spoke of is the curse of Ankhseram- the contradictory curse. The more you love life, the more death spreads around you.

You sigh and kneel in front of your student, bringing him closer to you. He tenses and tries to push away, afraid that he might cause you to disintegrate.

"You should know better than to mess with life and death idiot!" you mumble in his ear as you pat his back. "Don't worry... I am sort of immune to that curse".

"How?" he asks breaking your embrace.

"Well that's a story for after I finish my job," you stand up and dust off your clothes. "Do me a favor tho. Erase the child's memory from the moment he followed me into the fields up till now and send him back to his town," you order your former student and make your way to the hall.

"You can count on me sensei," he nods and begins to perform what was asked of him.

You stand in the middle of the hall, a magic circle appearing below your feet. You need no concentration since it is an easy task to barricade a mansion. The words flow from your lips and a magical barrier starts to descend upon the manor, "grant your protection to this household oh guardian Tutelar. Listen to your master and obey her orders". As a figure starts appearing towards you, you remind the spirit of your status,

"For I am (y/n).... The goddess of slaughter".
