PICKING AN INSTRUMENT

The first years sat in a circle and we went one round introducing our names and the instrument that we wanted to pick. Many people pick the trumpet, others the clarinet. I was sure of the tuba but when the Euphonium player came out and introduced himself as our incoming band major. I SWERVED. Looking at that really pretty silver coloured euphonium, the button valves, the way we hug it while we play. It looks really pretty and really cute. I now wanted to play the euphonium.

"I want to play the euphonium," I said confidently.

We were then asked to go around and try out the instrument as we held a piece of paper to get our grades on the instruments we tried. I want to try all even though it might make my choice difficult in the future.

The first instrument I tried out was the euphonium. Yes, I held that pretty baby in my hands and tried to get a note out. To my surprise, I managed to play a stable note.

"Hey that's good but we're not accepting any juniors this year," as though it's fate or something like unrequited love.

He then pulled out another instrument, this time instead it is a trombone. The instrument is very odd looking. There was no button, just a really long slide. I placed the instrument on my shoulder and after learning to stabilize it, I played again yet another note.

"You got talent, come try out my section for a bit," A fourth year senior said.

Introduced himself as Rusell and asked me to sit on the chair as he carefully placed my previous choice, the tuba, on my lap.The instrument was a little heavy. I struggled to place my arm but once I was done, I did the same thing as I did with the other two instruments, play a note.

"Wait, that's a Bb Flat no?" the euphonium guy said to Rusell.

Somehow they were impressed? I got a really good grade on all three instruments. Another person was trying out the euphonium but like she was already a player previously in her primary school. She was offered a place immediately.

"Wait Daph, I don't think you can actually play the tuba," I said as my friend in band approached me.

Well she's really thin and her forte is the trumpet and she was already a cornet player so she's pretty much set on picking the trumpet. I approached the trumpet section and was greeted by not a student but the junior conductor, Mr A.

I hold the instrument and observe it closely. It looks really sexy and earlier you heard pretty sounds coming out of the instruments. Honestly, the trumpet is really nice and it's lighter than the other three instruments. I kinda fell in love with it but not when you play it. I managed to get a sound but it hurts my lips as it's really high pitched.

After getting a C for it and getting a D on French Horn. My day of trying the brass instrument was complete. I make my way to the woodwinds next and proceed to do poorly on all the woodwind instruments. Seriously, why is woodwind so difficult to play?

I finalised my three choices in the order: Tuba, Trumpet and Euphonium.
