Y/N's POV:

It took a very long time to track Levi Ackerman down.

Days, no, even weeks you spent asking around, trying to find that stupid headquarters of the Survey Corps.

After you left, you immediately went to Trost District, which wasn't too far like Mikasa mentioned.

Hannes even filled you in on what the Survey Corps were like, though most of what he said was negative.

"Most of them are a bunch of devoted lunatics thinking they can do what they want and waste money on crazy expeditions, but I guess their hearts are in the right place."

Apparently, they were out on one of those expeditions and weren't due to come back for two more weeks.

"Damn it. Maybe I shouldn't have left..." You muttered coldly.

It was night time right now, so finding a place to sleep was your first priority.

It was obvious to you that sleeping in the town wasn't a good idea, because there were too many people fleeing from Shiganshina.

Way too many... You thought to yourself. Guess I'm sleeping near the fields tonight.

Usually, you slept right outside the town square, but it was becoming dangerous to the point where everyday a new dead body could be found.

The fields weren't a bad place to sleep, it was actually quite peaceful despite all the animals roaming around at night.

There was actually a tree that you would always sleep against at night that was located near the open grass fields.

It was weird, but it would always make you feel warm inside, which was especially good for tonight.

The temperature was bitterly cold, so you found yourself shivering and hugging your knees for warmth.

"Huh? That's odd, the tree feels colder than usual."

You lifted your hand to tear off a small piece of the dark brown bark, and you gasped quietly.

The bark inside was brown, almost black, instead of its normal white-green vibrant color.

"It's dead. It's really dead, damn it..." You solemnly whispered.

Walking just a few feet away, you glanced at the tree in all its isolated glory.

"Thank you for taking care of me these past few weeks. I won't let your sacrifice go to waste."

You then continued to walk away, wrapping yourself in an old blanket you had found, quietly sobbing for the sudden death of the tree.

"I... this isn't worth it. It isn't worth all this pain I'm feeling. I should just go back... yeah, maybe... back to Eren..."

. flashback .

"Y/N! Come here!!"

Eren shouted and waved to you from far away as you were walking back towards your house from your mother's tailor shop.

Your mother never came back from work until sundown, so that left you with some free time to walk around town.

It had only been a year or two since you and your mother moved to Shiganshina, and the only friend you had was Eren.

"Eren!?" You shouted back at him, puzzled.

You walked towards him, and you were surprised to see two other people behind him.
