Otis was a small brown squirrel who lived at a bridge nearby my house. Every day you would see Otis climbing and swinging tree to tree. He hadn’t a care in the world. You could tell he was a proud and gusty squirrel by the way he cleaned his fur and carried himself. He didn’t stop cleaning his fur until every hair was in place. I just so happens that I knew Otis personally, how you may ask well sit back and listen.
About four years ago I happen to be fishing at this bridge near Big Dam this was Otis’ home. And I was just fixing to find that out. As I sat there in the quiet I was about to have a little lunch on a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich when all of a sudden I had a bite on my fishing line. I started pulling and pulling with excitement in the air an bye the thrill of it all I was very distracted. All of a sudden this small brown squirrel appeared and he was eating my peanut-butter and jelly sandwich. Well I was in shock. I dropped my fishing pole in the water and grabbed it back. I had already lost my sandwich, but not my fish. Otis continued to eat all the snacks that I had brought while I continued to catch my fish.
Just as I was about to pull my fish out of the water, I saw with disbelief what was on my hook. Did you guess it? The animal that was on my hook was no other than a snapping turtle. He simply looked at me and let go and swam away. As I turned to confront Otis he was gone. I decided then and there to learn more about him. In a day or two later I went back to the bridge. It was a very old bridge with live oak trees the moss still hung there from the fall. The grass was coming alive with its green spring color. A few wild flowers were blooming. It was a beautiful sight to just sit there in the quiet well except for the animal life. You could hear the minnows jumping in the water. There was one blue heron standing there with a fish in his mouth. Needless to say I hadn’t caught anything yet. Once again I had brought mine and Otis favorite peanut-butter and jelly. I had a feeling it was only awhile before he would show up.
