Ludwig walked into his class with his brother, only to see that (Y/n) was in the class as well with that boy from earlier. He decided to sit behind her, Gilbert sat next to him.
(Y/n) turns around and flashes him a bright smile that makes hid heart stutter in his chest. "Hi, Luddy! I'm glad we have this class together!" She seemed genuinely happy, and that made Ludwig relax. They were still bestfriends, she hasn't replaced him. Yet, a tiny voice in the back of his mind irked. "Yeah, now I can make sure you actually do your homework on time." She let out a small, but genuine laugh.
(Y/n)'s gaze flickered over to Gilbert and her genuine smile began to look a little strained. "Hey, Gilbert..." He pursed his lips, unsure of what he should say. Her smile– though it was fake– dropped after a few moments of silence. Ivan turned around and stared.
"She said hello. The polite thing to do is say hello back, yes?" There was a strange look in his eye when he said that, yet his expression seemed so... unnaturally sweet. A shiver ran through Ludwig's body– yet Gilbert seemed unfazed. "I don't remember asking you." Gilbert snapped, now he had Ivan's full attention.
"You did not have to. (Y/n) is my friend. You ignoring her is making her very upset. Therefore I am upset greatly." The two stared each other down. Sensing the tension, (Y/n) decided to change the subject. "Um- hey, Ivan?"
His whole demeanor changes, like nothing even happened. He smiles sweetly at her and hums. "Da? What is it?"
"Why do you wear the scarf all the time? I hope that didn't come off as rude or anything!" She said frantically, Ludwig watched as she touched her neck, a nervous habit. "Niet. I did not see it as rude at all! I will tell you the story..."
Ludwig barely listened to him as he told the story of his sister giving him that scarf when he was younger and had no friends and now she works all the time so she can take care of him and his sister... honestly Ludwig couldn't believe the story at all. Sure, maybe some parts were real, but... he didn't think his sister could be a senior in World Academy and work a few jobs to keep a roof over their heads. It just wasn't plausible. (Y/n) on the other hand...
"Ivan..! That's awful! I'm so sorry you have to watch your sister go through that..." She looked like she was on the verge of tears, Ludwig was both shocked and disgusted. How dare he try and make (Y/n) feel bad for him?
"It is okay, do not worry, Friend (Y/n). Katyusha is a very happy woman despite being very sensitive. Since she is happy, I am happy." (Y/n) placed a hand on his forearm and flashed him a gentle smile. "I would love to meet her one day." The entire exchange made Ludwig sick to his stomach. Why? Why was she so close to this guy she just met today?
Why do you even care so much?
Thankfully, the teacher walked in and yawned. "Alright. Someone pass out the textbooks. I don't want them written on. I will find out if you ripped or spilled anything on the pages. Once I call your name, tell me the number written in the front cover of your textbook. You." The man pointed to the boy sitting on the right on (Y/n), he had shoulder length sandy blonde hair. He jumped. "Y-yes sir...?"
"Pass out the textbooks. They're the ones on the back counter." The boy quietly stood up and began passing around the textbooks. Gilbert nudges his brother with a stupid grin on his face. "Look, bruder, look! I have number one! They must know I am the awesomest to ever exist!" Ludwig was halfway through a sigh when he heard a snort. "What is so funny, (Y/n)?" She shook her head, trying to hold in her laugh. "Nothing..! It's just... nothing."

After school ended, Ludwig tracked (Y/n) down. "Hey," he breathed, "how was your first day?" They walked through the double doors and into the crisp almost-autumn air. "It was... kind of refreshing!" She laughed softly to herself. "I actually made a friend or two...!" She seemed so happy, it warmed his heart.
