Perhaps I treated you too harshly

Ayanokouji Kiyotaka

The first two months of our second year began without a hitch. Having already been issued a special exam, students of ANHS were also introduced to a new application displaying every student's certain abilities.

While some believed the OAA to be an invasion of privacy, others recognized the system as a badge of honor. The merits and capabilities of each individual are on display for the entire school to see just by simple navigation through their phones. Few individuals who boasted higher than average marks were flattered with their abilities assessments being broadcasted throughout the school. However, this doesn't hold true to the ones whose results leave much more to be desired. As for me, I've already experienced my fair share of intrusive eyes, both here and elsewhere. A short glimpse of my questionable data is inconsequential.

In regards to the OAA, the first special exam of the new year was revolved around it. Second-year students were tasked with partnering up with the newly arrived first-years in order to tackle the exam. Each student had been tested on five subjects worth an accumulative total of 500 points. If the pair's combined score failed to surpass 500 points, the second-year student would be expelled while the first-year will not be receiving any private points for a quarter of the year. Thankfully, all students of Class D were able to find suitable partners to get them through the exam.

"Psst. Ayanokouji-kun, Sensei is about to display our results for the special exam," My neighbor whispered to me.

Perhaps due to my brief window-side sight-seeing, I didn't notice the familiar stern instructor arriving inside the classroom.

"Jeez...Even during times like these, you're still carefree as ever," Matsushita gave me a quick side-eye glance.

"You wouldn't believe me, but I'm shaking on the inside." I wasn't. "More importantly, let's just pray we don't have to remove any more desks in this class." I didn't care about them in the slightest.

"Yeah...you're right on that."

While Chabashira-sensei began loading up her tablet, students quietly disbanded from their friend groups and made their way to their seats.

"I will now present the results of the special exam. While everything will be displayed up here on the blackboard, it will be on your tablets as well so you can check what you want in detail."

Following her instructions, students began looking at their results on their tablet screens, while some opted for the blackboard. The majority of students prioritized their scores instead, except for the select few who reviewed the performance of the class as a whole. I didn't see the need to check either.

"Oh thank God, I passed!"

"I was really anxious if my partner was gonna swindle me last minute!"

Sounds of cheers and constant fist-pumps were shared across the classroom. The ease of tension slowly relaxed our classroom. However, the once raucous room was quickly engulfed by an abrupt silence.

"Y-You got to be kidding me..." Ike brought his tablet closer to his face to re-read what was on the screen.

"A-Ayanokouji-kun..."

Their reactions were to be expected, I was already well aware of what was the cause of the immediate shock. Though I couldn't quite understand Chabashira-sensei and Horikita's expressions, as their widened eyes and agape mouths were far too excessive in their part.

All in all, students should be surprised that my name on the math section is quite a place higher than usual-

"Ayanokouji...Unfortunately, your pair wasn't able to exceed the 500 point threshold. This will result in a point deficit for your partner...and immediate expulsion for you..." Chabashira-sensei's voice strained as she finished.
