Chapter 5

"Dr Walker can we please talk about a patient," the all too familiar voice of Dr Trevelyan sounded after her as she practically ran down the corridor to evade him. Emmy had only talked to Dr Dickhead once, but his voice was engrained on her brain. Emmy spun on her heels, letting the panting Dr D catch up with her. "I need to talk to you about a Ms Martin," Emmy nodded.

"The floor is yours," she motioned around her, "so talk."

"Will you just come with me," Dr D said exasperated, Emmy was very sure this was no longer about a patient. He led her into one of the currently disused longer stay rooms. Emmy was starting to get very unnerved by the lack of people in the ER, it was mid-July and they would normally have loads of holiday, who had been stupid and got hurt. If everyone had managed to grasp the concept of common sense she would soon be out of a job.

"Look I just really wanted to apologies," Dr D said leaning back against one of the beds, "will you give me a chance to make amends over coffee?"

"I don't have..."

"Before you finish that sentence with time, the ER is empty, I'm only asking for a couple of minutes, you have a break coming up, and you're only going across the road."

"Fine," Emmy couldn't argue, and as head of Cardio, she was going to run into him, a lot, she couldn't constantly refuse him.

"See you across the road in 10," Dr D left the room. 'Maybe he wasn't that bad after all,' she mused to herself.

"Walker," he called as she walked in. Emmy walked over to see he had already brought her a coffee, black Americano. "I asked around to find out what you liked, it was pretty unanimous," he gave her a sweet boyish smile.

"So what do you want to tell me, Trevelyan?" Emmy said sitting down, she would have addressed him by his first name, but she couldn't actually remember it. Actually she was pretty amazed she remembered his last name and didn't just call him Dr Dickhead.

"Mainly I just wanted to apologies. Before I left my last position I was told by the chief of staff that you are a real ball buster and to not take any shit from you. So I went in guns blazing, made a show of standing up to you, just to, well, earn the respect of my department. I knew going in that they didn't want the old head replaced, so I had to try to think of a way to win them over. The cardio department is an all guys club at the moment, so I thought I could use your anti-bullshit attitude to earn some brownie point. That's why I didn't want to have this conversation in the hospital, didn't want it getting out, and then everyone thinking it was all staged, it's not like they are the brightest lights in the hospital, but they are bloody good surgeons." Emmy smiled at the last part of his speech.

"That's not just the Cardiac boys, it's all the surgeons, it's why I got out," Emmy said with a smile.

"You were a surgeon," He asked surprised, Emmy just nodded, "I'm actually surprised, you just seem too...grounded."

"It's what hanging out with medics does to you; I was a trauma surgeon until I got the post when the last guy left. No one was happy I got the post, so that's why became a ball buster, only way to get respect in there," he just nodded in agreement with Emmy's statement.

"Can I ask for a third first impression?"

"Well considering the first too I got of you seem completely wrong, I don't see why that would be a problem."

"Hi, I'm Justin Trevelyan; I'm new to the city and the only four places I know are; my flat, the hospital across the road where I work, this café, and the grocery store. I was hoping you would show me around the city and if I was really lucky, go on a date with me?" Justin asked a hopeful smile on his face. Emmy wasn't sure at first, she and Zach weren't official, but was this allowed, just sitting talking to Justin now she felt like there was something between them. She wasn't sure that she had ever gotten that with Zach; she had gotten excited and carried away when they had kissed but was that just because he was sexy as hell and a great kisser, or did she actually feel something more for him. The real reason she didn't want to sleep with Zach was because she really wasn't sure she want to go from friends to more.
