Chapter 6

Emmy sat in her living room staring at two pieces of paper, one for Zach one for Justin. Emmy loved pro con lists; they had never led her astray before, until now. Now she was staring about two lists identical in length on both sides of the argument. To make it worse having read and re read the two lists they had no glaring deal breaker. She had dated been dating Zach for three weeks and Justin for about two and quizzed them on everything from the big things like children to the stupidly small stuff like their favourite pair of shoes and there was nothing wrong with either of them. She had set aside tonight for making a decision, unplugged her phone and bolted her door, but she just couldn’t make it.

Emmy decided to read the lists again, a pointless idea, since she could probably recite it off by heart.

Zach, pros, sweet, funny, knows everything about her…con serial dating playboy, a bit of a work-a-holic, no honeymoon period because they’ve know each other so long…

Justin, pros, gentle, sensitive, honest…con, can’t be seen to be together at work, arrogant, doesn’t really like going out on dates…

She took another sip of wine, “Alcohol, not the answer but it definitely does make you forget the problem,” Emmy whispered to herself. Her mobile buzzed, damn it she forgot to turn it, it was from Zach, she had decide to ignore both men until she made her decision, secretly hoping one would lose interest and make the decision for her.

‘What’s up babe, I haven’t see you in a while, text me back, please x’

Emmy chucked her phone on the bed, deciding sleeping on the decision was the best idea.

‘Heyya Zach, I need to see you ASAP, we need to talk,’ Emmy text him the next morning.

‘Sure, breakfast?’ Zach text back immediately. “Shit,” he yelled, falling back into bed. He launched his phone across the room; he was rather disappointed when it didn’t shatter. Emmy had been off for a while and after that text he knew what was coming next, the break up. Actually was it even a break up if they had never really gotten together, the worst part was it was all his fault, if he had asked her not to date this Justin she wouldn’t be picking Justin over him right now. He groaned, but dragged himself out of bed to meet the inevitable.

Emmy sat waiting for him in the iHop they were having breakfast in; she was wearing the little white sundress he loved so much. She nervously watched the door, and drank her third cup of coffee; increasing worried he was going to stand her up.

“Don’t you know you shouldn’t keep a girl waiting,” Emmy said as he strolled in twenty minutes late. Zach smiled half-heartedly at her.

“Sorry,” he whispered in her ear, as she got up and hugged him, he was wearing a black cotton shirt with his dark blue jeans. Emmy took her seat again and picked up a menu.

“What do you want?” Emmy smiled brightly at him, but he just looked at her with a deadpan expression.

Zach took her hand, and worry struck Emmy's face, “Emmy I can’t drag this out any longer, it’s not working between us,” his voice was cold and it cut Emmy like knives. “See you later buddy,” Zach patted her shoulder, as he got up and left. Emmy was so shocked by his words she couldn't speak, couldn’t beg him to stay, and try again, she couldn’t even run after him and beg for an explanation.
