They news released early this morning. Holden's face plastered all over the media. His illness finally known to the public.
I'm washing the dishes, listening to the radio as the broadcaster talks with a cardiologist regarding what atrial fibrillation means.
I picture Sophia today, furious that her last shred of leverage over Holden disappears before her very eyes. I let the image go; the last time I will ever willingly let Sophia take up my thoughts.
Parker walks into the kitchen, rapping his knuckles against the counter to get my attention. "You don't need to do that," he says.
"I still have the energy to wash a couple dishes," I deadpan.
I watch him over my shoulder as he gazes at me carefully. "I know that."
"Good."
"You've been listening to this all morning," he yawns, pointing to the radio. "Why?"
"Because I want to know what everyone is thinking. So I can explain to Holden when he wakes up that the world isn't against him. That his illness won't affect his career."
"And?"
"I was right," I smile, watching my hands as I move them through the soapy water. "He's going to be just fine."
Parker drops me off out the front of the hospital, promising that he'd be waiting back here when I called.
I enter the waiting room to find Brooks leaning against the wall, hands crossed over his chest. I envision the first time I'd ever seen him all those months ago, how I'd believed him to be scary. How wrong I'd truly been.
He greets me with a sincere nod, shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants.
"How is he?" I ask, biting my lip nervously.
"Declan's with him right now," Brooks smiles softly, "he hasn't woken up yet but the doc said it should only be a matter of time."
