Sunny and Basil share a "secret" on a class field trip.

Sunny crouched before his best friend as the smell of rain grew ever stronger, now dripping down from the overcast sky. His heart raced as he tried to catch his breath. The two of them had broken away from the rest of the class trip and now stared at each other, hidden beneath the sunflowers towering above them. Sunny could see Basil struggling to breathe as well, both of them tired from their escape. accompanied by the quivering flowers and the occasional gust of wind, the two boys stared at each other as they shook off the coming storm.

After some time, one of them broke the silence.

"Sunny, do you ever think about, well, girls?" Basil said.

Sunny closed his eyes and brought himself back to that rainy morning not long ago. Aubrey's bright pink raincoat and matching umbrella complemented her 'girly' demeanor. She had even talked about dying her hair the same. He thought it suited her. He felt his face heating up upon the realization of the meaning behind such a question.

Sunny hummed and gave Basil a slight nod.

"Oh, I thought so. . ."

Basil felt his heart sink into the pit of his stomach. He knew his best friend had a crush on Aubrey for a while now. He would catch him staring at her during class sometimes and even asked him directly once. He vehemently denied it, but he was too easy to read with his ears and nose dusted with pink as he squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head like someone had offered him a liverwurst sandwich. He was just the cutest thing sometimes.

There they were again, those. . . intrusive thoughts. He tried to ground himself as he gripped his arms. The chilled air pricked his sweaty face and reminded him that this retreat would be short-lived. Come on, Basil, you can do this. . .

"Do you?" Sunny replied.

"Huh?" Hearing the usually quiet boy's voice suddenly caught Basil off guard.

He shifted in his spot and pushed up the mud from the bottom of his shoes. He really never had a crush on a girl. Sure he thought Aubrey was cute as well, but she never really invoked anything in him. It was strange, the only person he ever felt he had a crush on was. . .

Basil found himself staring into Sunny's deep brown eyes.

"Ah! Um, s-sorry.." He squeaked out as he hid his reddening face in his hands. It wasn't normal for boys to like other boys. His feelings were all messed up, wrong. Why couldn't he think of Aubrey in the same way Sunny did? The now drizzling rain hid the blonde's quiet tears.

Sunny watched as Basil shied away from his curious gaze. He stepped a bit closer in an effort to comfort his friend. The blonde boy would shiver as each raindrop delicately slid down his arms, and his tousled bangs drooped down in front of his hands as he hid his face from view. He looked so delicate, so fragile, not unlike the flowers he so meticulously cared for. As he leaned in, he could hear the distinct sound of the flowerboy's stifled sobs. They sounded like a bad case of the hiccups but Sunny became more accustomed to them from many days after school spent listening to his best friend's worries.

"What's wrong?" Sunny quietly asked as he placed a hand on the young gardener's shoulder.

"Ummm, I-I-It's nothing." Basil said as he lowered his face and attempted to get as close to a fetal position as possible while still squatting.

Sunny could tell this was definitely not nothing, he knew Basil much too well to fall for that. The whirling winds bent the sunflowers to their will as the storm picked up in intensity. The two of them should really head back, but. . .
