Y/n suddenly became aware of the rough texture sliding across her skin. She opened her eyes and watched as Alpine continued to lick her cheek. Y/n scratched her head affectionately and set Alpine down next to her on the bed. She kicked her feet off the bed with a yawn stretching her hands over her head.

Y/n made her way to the kitchen not even caring to change out of her hello kitty pajamas. She grabbed a mug out of the cupboard and juice out of the fridge. She poured the apple juice into the cup taking a seat at the dining room table.

Soon everyone else began to wake up and fill into the kitchen making coffee and breakfast. Several of the Avengers sat around the table next to Y/n. The dining room was pretty much quiet. They all kept to themselves either scrolling on their phone, reading a newspaper, or eating.

Y/n scrolled through her phone opening unanswered emails, and texts. Some people from college had sent her the old headlines from the press conference telling her how lucky she was to work with the Avengers and congratulating her. She mainly ignored and deleted them.

Tony came up behind Y/n and slung his arm around her giving her a half hug "Happy Birthday Sunshine."

She turned her body halfway around and smiled at him "Thanks, Tony."

"I didn't know it was your birthday! I guess that explains why you're down here for breakfast with us for once." Wanda shrieked.

"It's not that big of a deal. I was hoping Tony wouldn't have remembered." Y/n didn't want anyone to know She even made sure FRIDAY wouldn't have told them. So much good that did her.

Y/n had always loathed her birthday. Since she was little it had always represented everything she hated it was kind of bitter-sweet.  She didn't like the attention, she didn't like getting older. What about presents? Not that either. Most parents got their 9-year-old a doll or a bike. Her dad got her a .22 and a hunting knife. The only thing that got her to the next birthday was the thought of getting out, being more than what she was.

Her birthday was also the anniversary of her first kill. It had been exactly twenty years since she first pulled a trigger, first felt the kickback of a gun, first smelt the residue of gun powder. 20 years since the first time she had ever taken a life. 20 years since she figured out how harsh the world truly could be.

"Well, now I don't have time to plan anything." Wanda frowned, giving Y/n sad puppy dog eyes.

Tony snapped his fingers and pointed at her. A smile growing on his face "Exactly so that's why I brought it upon myself to throw her a party. It starts at eight so don't be late. Hey, that kind of rhymes." Tony laughed at himself.

"Tony you shouldn't have." He really should not have. All Y/n wanted to do was chill in her room with alpine. She didn't want a big party, she didn't want expensive presents, she didn't want the attention. It wasn't that she wasn't that great full. It wasn't that at all. It just was one of those things that were harder than others.

"Relax, you're going to have a blast." Tony squeezed her shoulder and walked away. Y/n pressed her lips into a thin line. She pressed her lips into a tight line and finished her juice.

Tony had delivered a long beautiful emerald dress to Y/n's room. It was tight at the top and flowed near the bottom with a slit on the left side. Wanda had come to her room earlier and brought her a silver pair of heels and a matching set of earrings.
