Alexander dropped his quill in frustration. The bit of ink on the tip splattered over the page of writing he had been working on, leaving a few words smudged and unreadable. He'd have to fix it in the morning. Right now, he was more concerned with his personal life than with his work life.
Him and Eliza had gotten into a fight. It was an odd feeling, they never fought much. In fact, this was the first time they'd had such a bad argument since they got married.
Alex wanted to apologize, he wanted to go hug his wife and whisper sweet nothingness into her ear as they fell asleep, but his lingering anger held him back. Besides she was probably still frustrated as well, it was better to leave it for now.
It was quite late at this point. Alexander considered going to his and Eliza's room but she might be sleeping there, it was better to stay in his office.
A quiet knock at his door snapped him out of his thoughts.
"Yes?" He responded hesitantly.
The door creaked open revealing Eliza, her eyes glued to the ground. "Are you coming to bed?" Her voice was quiet and hesitant. If Alexander hadn't been paying attention he may have missed her question.
"Oh sure," he responded. His tone was awkward and unsure, he couldn't tell if Eliza was over the quarrel or if she was just being courteous.
Eliza nodded and let the door close. Alexander listened as she padded down the hall and up the stairs. He slipped his quill into his drawer and tidied up the mess of papers before following the footsteps of his wife up to their bedroom.
Eliza was already in bed, facing the wall. Alexander frowned as he took of his slippers and got under the covers. He turned to face the wall as well.
After a few minutes of laying down he felt something brush over his hand. He turned over to look at Eliza. She was laying still and quiet, facing the wall as she had been when Alexander got into bed, but he could tell she had moved to brush her hand over his.
Despite all the built up anger and frustration from the argument before, they still deeply cared and loved each other. Even the worst of their fights wasn't enough to break them apart.
Alexander took his hand and brushed it over Eliza's. He almost gasped when he felt her grab it.
The pair laid facing away from each other, but holding each other's hands. Even when they were at odds, they still showed how they loved each other. Their love ran deeper than an argument could cut.
