i come from

i come from manners
pleases and thankyous
the mums in the playground
a dad gone far away
a brother first, then a sister
a family who loved me
yet cried in my shoulder

i come from popularity
looming all around
selfies and likes
Facebook and Instagram
being rated on everything
not caring about life

i come from a street
from my town to the next
never ending, like my existence
born in London
made in school
well dones and good jobs
mum nagging

i come from music
pop, rock, classical
clarinet and piano
singing all the time
but sport is better
better to run
than recite beethoven's fifth

i come from sadness
i come from the dark
i come from the beer bottles
smashed in the park

i come from happiness
friends and family
love and laughing
roller-coaster of emotion
smiling, joy
flowers all around

i come from baring skin
crop tops and bum shorts
don't worry about the cold
belly button piercings
be slimmer, be prettier
fix your teeth and brush your hair
but don't forget to be happy

i come from stories
rumours at school
novels at home
writing for friends
reading reading reading

i come from me
a soul deep within
a slither of emotion
a tiny piece of human
but me never comes out
me never gets heard
me gets trampled on
by manners, by popularity
by a street, by music
by happiness, by sadness
by baring skin, by stories
by me
