"Up! Up! I swear- get yer shuck butt up!" A quick yank of the covers made Alex pry her eyelids open. Newt's soft brown eyes were staring back at her.
"What?"
"Ya sleep like a bloody log. Now get up, yer with the Cooks this mornin'."
Alex smiled and rubbed her eyes to wipe away the drowsiness.
"Morning Fry!' Alex strolled into the kitchen and walked up to the cook, who was grilling sausage.
"Morning Greenbean," he said, "Go grab the bowl of eggs from the fridge."
"There's a fridge here?" Alex opened the fridge door and handed Frypan the eggs.
Making breakfast was fairly easy, at least something that Alex would consider doing while in the Glade. Frypan was funny and he kept making jokes about the eggs being 'cracked' after he split them over the bowl.
For lunch they made soup and sandwiches, which turned out amazing, and dinner was chicken breast and corn on the cob. Frypan turned out to be a really great guy, someone who was easy to talk to.
Alex sat cross legged in the grass next to Newt. They looked out over the strawberries, discussing their days and what they would do tomorrow.
"You know," Alex started to say. "We're friends, right?"
Newt laughed a little. "'Course Greenie."
The girl looked up into his chocolate eyes. She knew the conversation was about to get really personal but she was too curious to keep the subject away any longer. She unconsciously plucked out a piece of grass and twirled it between her fingers.
"What did you do to your foot?"
Newt looked confused. "Excuse me?"
Alex sighed. "You know, your limp." She smiled a little, hoping to lighten the mood that was darkening quickly.
"That's another story Greenie. I'll tell you one buggin' day, but not today. Have patience." He said.
The girl smiled, remembering when Newt had told her to have patience when waiting for the griever. She stood up and said goodnight then walked to her sleeping bag. Alex fell asleep right away and was lost in dreams of the Maze.
