Nina Salazar-Roberts, Princess of Availa, has been heir to the throne since the day she was born.
The likings of her becoming queen has always been a sore subject to the people of Availa due to the fact that she is adopted, and therefore does not have true royal blood, but the Salazar-Roberts family tries not to let that deter them.
Princess Nina's parents are both women, you see, so the chances of them creating a child together were not likely. Rather than finding a donor to help them create a child, they decided to adopt a child in need of a family. Thus, Nina Salazar-Roberts came to be.
Nina knows that the people do not bode well to her, and she knows she can work with that. She also knows, however, that she must marry another with royal blood in order to remain valid to the throne.
She must marry someone else who is not the heir to their throne, but is nonetheless royal by blood.
In other words, many girls dream of marrying a prince and becoming a princess, whereas she needs the validity of some stranger prince in order to inherit a throne that is rightfully hers anyway.
You could say that Nina is not too pleased with the idea... Yet, she knows what she must do.
Her pickings are rather too slim for her liking, as she is very picky with her relations. As a young child, she was known to walk away from people she didn't see to be worthy of her time.
She's been taught now that her ways were rude, but that does not change the fact that she wants to continue to act as such.
"We have another prospective gentleman, Princess," a guard named Jaq informs her.
Nina sighs. "If I must."
Nina straightens herself up, fixing her posture and lifting her chin. She has to look as intimidating as possible.
The doors open and in walks a slender man, taller than Nina with curly brown hair.
Nina has to fight back the urge to roll her eyes.
It's the boys with curly hair that have the worst issues with narcissism.
Just as she expected, his face morphs into a smirk.
"M'Lady," he greets with an over exaggerated bow.
Nina scoffs. "Next."
"Princess, your mother requested that you allow him five minutes," Jaq reasons.
"Which mother?" Nina asks, though she knows exactly which he'd say before the response.
"Queen Dana."
Dana has always been the one to push Nina to where she wants her to be.
Nina sighs in agitation. "Five minutes."
"I'm not sure of whatever I've done wrong, Madam," the man presses.
She knows he's addressing her like this intentionally.
"What is your name?" Nina asks with a straight face.
"Prince Richard Bowen the Third of Pantan."
"And you put your title in front of your name, yes?"
Richard nods with the smirk still prevalent on his face. "I suppose I did."
"As a Prince, I believe you should be wise enough to properly address an heir. What is it your intentions are here? To simply be rude enough to me that your family would be shunned from my country?" Nina raises an eyebrow.
Richard laughs. "I do have another intention, though I do wish that could be it."
Nina narrows her eyes, not taking them off of him before she speaks. "Jaq, if you could please give us a moment alone."
Jaq nods, exiting and closing the doors behind him.
"What do you want?" Nina sneers.
"To marry you."
Nina scoffs. "Right. And I will undoubtedly agree to that with how you've treated me."
"I know you don't intend to find true love with this search for a husband of royal blood." Richard starts, seeming cocky. "You need someone that will make you acceptable for the throne, and I fit the criteria perfectly."
Nina raises an eyebrow suspiciously. "And what would you get out of this arrangement?"
"My country is small and does not have many resources. We could benefit from an alliance," Richard explains.
"And you plan to give your life away to another country solely to help yours?" Nina asks, not truly believing that is his only angle.
"My country needs help, and I am able to contribute. If all it takes is marrying myself away to a Princess, I am more than willing."
"You're awfully bold coming in here so rudely if you want to help your country so badly."
"I was not going to lie to you about who I am or what I am like. Otherwise, you'd have agreed and expected me to subdue," Richard raises an eyebrow, as though seeking confirmation.
"You do realize you are offering to be the King of a country, yes? Where I would be forced to trust you to allow me to make decisions I know are right for my country."
"I would want no part in making those decisions for you. You are the heir to the throne, I simply would have the title of King."
"I cannot lie to you, Prince Richard. This sounds appealing, though I remain skeptical," Nina expresses.
"We can have a written contract with rules and regulations. If I break any, I can be confined to live in a cellar and only brought out for large celebrations for all I care. I solely wish to appease my country," Richard gushes.
Nina notices that his demeanor has changed greatly since his arrival. He truly seems to care for his country so deeply. That kind of passion makes a good king.
"I will ponder this proposition over time. If I agree, I will have a contract sent to you in your country. If not, I expect that you respect my decision."
Richard nods, though he cannot help but smile slightly.
"If I find your intentions to be negative in the slightest sense, your country will be entirely exiled from Availa."
Richard nods once more. "Understood, Princess."
Nina sighs, noting his lingering smile. "Get out."
Richard turns away, a slight hop in his step.
She knows he is confident that his proposal was good, and she cannot deny that.
Whether she should take it...
That is a whole separate issue.
