Lillian’s POV

My world came crashing down all at once. Nate had a girlfriend. A girlfriend! After all that we’d been through, he tells me he has a girlfriend. I thought we had something special, but turns out, I was completely wrong. I should have known he was nothing but a player who was leading me on.

I turned around to face Nate, who was staring at the ground. When he saw me staring, actually more like glaring at him, he said, “Lil, look I-”

“Nate, I don’t want to hear it. What’s done is done.”

“I made a mistake-”

“Yeah, a big one.”

“Hear me out,” he said. I stayed silent. “I like you. A lot. I’ve never met anyone like you. Or had such a good time with someone. I like you better than Chrissy-”

“Okay, if you like me better than Chrissy,” I said, sneering, “Then why did you tell me about her in the first place?” Jealousy certainly brought out the bad side in me.

Nate stayed silent. “Exactly. You still care about her. I will not love- I mean like someone who’s heart is split between two people, Nate.” I turned around and walked toward the Vespa. “Now can we please go before it gets dark?”

Nate followed me and got on the scooter.

Nate’s POV

The Vespa ride was complete silence between Lilly and I. It was the first time she’d actually not said anything for more than five minutes.

We rode through the little town again until we reached the Vespa rental place again. Lilly quickly cut the engine and leaped off the scooter before walking towards the old guy who rented us the Vespa. She handed him the money and walked back towards me, but refused to make eye contact.

Lilly looked really nice today. Her flowered shorts showed off her long legs and her long blonde ringlets were messily tossed behind her from the ride back. I felt awful for telling her about Chrissy. Lilly was completely right. I should have broken up with Chrissy since I like Lilly more.

Lilly stomped past me, not waiting for me to catch up.

“Lilly! Can’t we talk?” I called after her.

She didn’t respond, but I knew she’d heard me. She was giving me the silent treatment- so fifth grade.

We walked in silence to the train station. Lilly slumped down in her seat once we boarded the train. She was still refusing to look at me. She was certainly a grudge holder.

 Lillian’s POV

I stared out the dirty train window and watched as we whizzed past trees, farm animals, and houses. All of a sudden Nate’s hand was on my shoulder so I turned around to face him. Then he kissed me, just like before. And I couldn’t help but kiss him back.

I heard quiet “awwwws” from people sitting near us. As I pulled away from Nate he looked me straight in the eye and said, “Lilly, I’m sorry... I- I think I love you.” He said the six best words any girl wants to hear- him apologize and say he loves you.

The corners of my lips formed a smile and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“You’re not so bad yourself,” I said, smacking his arm. “Are you going to dump Chrissy?”

Nate nodded. I smiled. Then all of a sudden I realized something as I glanced out the window.

“Do you by any chance have your cell phone?” I asked Nate.

“No, why? It doesn’t even work here anyway.”

“Oh, no reason. I just maybe left mine on the kitchen counter and I told everyone that we’d be home before dark, and now it’s dark and we’re not home. Do you see the problem developing here?”

“Lilly! How could you have forgotten your phone?”

“I just didn’t grab it. I-”

“I meant, how could this happen.” Nate took a few deep breaths before starting over. He pushed his brown hair out of his eyes before he said, “Okay, we’ll get off at our stop. Then we’ll find a pay phone. We’ll call your parents and say we missed the train and had to take another one and now it’s dark, so they need to come get us. How ‘bout that?”

“Yes, that’s good. But we still have another half hour to go, so sit back and relax,” I said, resting my head on his muscular shoulder before dozing off to sleep.
