Lillian’s POV
I peered out my bedroom window and saw Nate walking down the street, headed towards my house whistling with his hands in his pockets.
I glanced at my clock and saw that it was indeed ten thirty which was when Nate said he would arrive. Throwing on a pair of flowered shorts and navy blue tee shirt, I ran downstairs, just in time for the doorbell to ring.
“Hey,” he said, as I opened the door, revealing his bright green eyes.
“Hi. So, ready to go?”
“Yep. Lead the way, tour-guide,” he said, waiting for me to pass him after I had thrown on my ballet pumps and grabbed my flowered bag.
Looking behind me I said, “So, how was dinner with Nancy and Tom last night? I heard they planned something special.”
“Oh, it was good. Nice dinner, a movie,” he said, stopping in front of Georgina, waiting for me to unlock the door.
“We’re not taking Georgina, Nate. We’re walking.”
“Walking where?”
“Train station.”
“Oh.” We headed out down the street towards the little train station, “Hey, Lilly?” Nate asked.
“Yeah?”
“Wait, like, how old are you?”
I bit my lip to keep from smiling, “Twenty five.”
Nate’s eyes bulged. “Oh.”
“Why do you ask?”
“Well, I was wondering why you didn’t go to school, but...”
“Oh, I’m home schooled- I mean I used to be home schooled,” I said, catching my mistake.
Nate looked suspicious. He raised his eyebrows and said, “Why do you look so young?”
“What kind of question is that? I can’t change if I look young or not. Like fifty year olds don’t choose to look old. It just happens!”
Nate started cracking up. “Okay, you are soooo lying. Seriously, how old are you?”
I grinned, “I’m sixteen- almost seventeen.”
“I knew it. So are you really home schooled?”
“Yes. Always have been. The nearest school to here is about forty five minutes away- by car... Now how old are you?”
“I’m seventeen- almost eighteen,” Nate said, imitating me.
I smiled as we walked into the train station parking lot. My smile fell when I saw the train puffing out gray smoke, a sure sign it was about to depart.
I grabbed Nate’s arm and sprinted to the ticket master, who took forever to give us the round trip tickets. We boarded the train just as it chugged off. I collapsed into a seat and sighed, earning a few glance my way from other people on the train. Nate sat next to me and sighed too.
“Good thing we made it,” I said, grinning. “Next train doesn’t come for another two days.”
Nate looked confused. “Then how are we getting home if the train doesn’t come here until Saturday?”
“We’ll get off a few towns over and bicycle home,” I explained.
“Bike home?”
“Yeah, we’ll rent bicycles and return them by car the next day.”
