Chapter 3

recap: "Lilly, where are we going?" I asked, nervously.

"You'll see," she replied with a smile.

Nate’s POV

Lilly grabbed my arm and dragged me next to her. I was a little nervous about where we were going. We were parked on the edge of the road about eight minutes away from Gram and Gramps house but it literally looked like we were in the middle of nowhere.

“Scared?” Lilly asked, raising her eyebrows. 

“Not at all,” I said, brushing past her.

About three minutes later, after leaving the heavily wooded area, I saw a beautiful red barn in the middle of an open field, surrounded by an old wooden fence. Lilly grabbed my arm again and ran towards the field. She hopped the fence and continued running to the barn. 

“Lilly!” I called out to her.

She turned around, “What?”

“This is trespassing!”

“Not if it’s your land!” she shouted, smiling. Wait, did that mean this was her land?

We walked into the barn, a draft of cool air hitting me in the face. I looked around; there were four horses each in their own stable, hay bales every where, and a small room with all the equipment. 

“Wait, so these are your horses?” I asked.

“Yep. Well, my family’s. You wanna ride?”

“Well, I’ve never been horse back riding before...”

“I’ll teach you,” she said grinning, while walking into the storage room.

She grabbed a pair of riding pants and boots off the shelf. She dug through some other clothes and shoes and found a pair of pants and boots for me, too.

“Here,”she threw them at me, “These are Landon’s. I’m sure he won’t mind. It’s just so you’re legs don’t get sore from the horse’s hair.”

“Right...” I said.

“Just turn around, okay. There’s no bathroom here, so we have to make do with this little room. Tell me when you’re done changing, alright?”

“Yeah, sure,” I said, turning around to face a wall.

“Done!” she yelled. 

“Same,” I said turning around to face her. She threw her skirt over the dusty chair and slipped her tall leather boots over her riding pants. She grabbed a saddle off it’s hook, and handed it to me. I nearly dropped it.

“Wow, Nate. Your looks are deceiving. You look so strong and muscular, but I guess that’s not the case,” she said, giggling.

“Shut up, Lilly. I just wasn’t expecting it to be that heavy,” I said, teasingly.

She grabbed a saddle of her own and walked to a stable. 

“Hi, Penny,” she cooed as she pet the beautiful copper colored horse. I reached my hand forward to pet it’s nose. Lilly introduced us, “This is Penny. She’s my horse.” I smiled.

Lilly hooked Penny’s rope to the side of the barn, while we moved to the next stable over. Behind the door was a large, black horse. “This is Bolt. You can ride him. He’s my mom’s horse. Do you want to lead him out or shall I?”

I nervously laughed, “You can.”

Lillian’s POV

“Come on, can’t you catch up?” I yelled behind my shoulder.

  “Lilly,” he whined, dragging out the “y” in my name. What a baby.

I stopped Penny and waited for Nate and Bolt to catch up. “Okay, here’s your riding lesson for the day. Just dig your heel into his side. It’ll speed him up to a trot. Can you handle it?”

“Of course I can handle it,” he snapped. 

“Alright, then trot.” Surprisingly, he brought Bolt to a trot and soon we were cantering along the high summer grass, laughing. I pulled Penny to a stop and Nate did the same. 

I smiled. “You know, for some reason I feel like I’ve known you forever.”

Nate smiled too, “Lilly, I feel the same way.”

“Hmm, wonder why...”

“Because I’m so likable,” he jokingly suggested.

I leaned over to hit his shoulder, “Nice ego you got there.”

“Thanks!” he replied sarcastically.

“Race ya!” I shouted as I took off away from Nate. 

Before I knew it, Nate and Bolt were ahead of me. Laughing, I pulled Penny to another stop when I saw the small pond in front of me. I attached Penny’s lead to a large tree branch and got off her, walking closer to the pond. I took a seat on a large rock jutting out over the water. A few seconds later, Nate was sitting next to me. 

“So, how do you like riding?” I asked him.

“It’s fun. I like Bolt. And it’s fun riding with you,” he said, laughing.

I slipped off my boots and let my feet hang in the water. “Glad you like it. We could do it again. Wait, when are you leaving?”

“Are you anxious for me to leave, Lilly?”

“No, of course not! I just want to make sure we have enough time to do all the awesome stuff I planned.”

“Awesome stuff?” he asked, arching his left eyebrow.

“Yes, I have planned awesome stuff,” I said pushing his arm... maybe a little too hard. All of a sudden Nate was in the water. 

I cracked up laughing. Nate stood up covered in the dirty pond water, glaring at me... in a friendly way. 

“Oh, you’re so gonna get it, Lil!” he shouted, as he tugged on my foot as I followed him into the water.

I glared at him back, but I guess we were even. And after our stare down, it turned into a laugh attack and soon we were wading and splashing around in the pond. 

“Come on, Nate,” I said, grabbing his arm and pulling him out of the water, “It’s getting late.”

“Aw, Lilly, come on, I haven’t had this much fun in, like, a while,” he whined, splashing water my way. 

“Fine,” I gave in, “Fifteen more minutes.”

Nate’s POV

Back at the barn, I helped Lilly put the horses equipment back. We were both still sopping wet, so we changed into our clothes from before the ride, not that we had shirts to change into. 

I had to admit, riding with Lilly was so much fun! Hanging out with Lilly was way more fun than hanging with Chrissy. She was so uptight and boring, while Lilly was fun, adventurous, and happy.

“Nate, let’s go,” Lilly beckoned me towards Georgina.

We climbed in and were on our way when Georgina spluttered and came to a stop.

“Awww, not again,” I groaned.

“Out ya go,” Lilly said, laughing.
