Chapter 20 - Drama
*Dustin’s POV*
‘Great,’ I thought, ‘my sister found her way back to her ex-boyfriend and kidnapper. Just wonderful.’
I glared at Lu and stormed out of her room.
“Dustin, come back! I didn’t know!”
I marched right up to Mr. Deford.
“Mr. Deford, I need you to take me to Clara. Right. Now. Her ‘friend’ is a bad person and we have a restraining order against him.”
Mr. Deford looked taken aback. Puzzled he asked, “What? Let’s go right now. Explain to me in the car.”
We retrieved Clara safety from Sam’s house. Mr. And Mrs. Deford and I were in her room, arms-crossed and staring at her while she cried.
“I cannot BELIEVE you had the nerve to go see him, Clara!” I hollered.
Clara and Sam were together shortly after my cousins moved into the house. Since I didn’t approve and didn’t want them together, he kidnapped her. She was thirteen at the time and Sam was sixteen. Now she’s fifteen and he’s eighteen. After bugging my cousins for weeks after we got her back into our custody, they placed a straining order again Sam and his family from ever contacting or seeing Clara again.
“I’m sorry!” her wavering voice shot back.
“What were you thinking?!”
“I don’t know! He texted me and…” She trailed off.
“I don’t care how he got your number or how you got in contact, if you see or text him again you can forget being a part of my family and go live with his and I will get a restraining order against you to never speak to me, Bridget, or Thomas again!”
I stormed out the door and down the stairs only to find Joy staring sympathetically at me through her navy glasses.
“Hey, Dust. Everything’s going to be ok. She’s home and she’s safe, that’s all that matters.”
I tried to produce a weak smile but it didn’t happen. Joy walked over to were I was sitting and pulled me into her embrace. Rubbing my back she said, “Don’t worry, ok?” I nodded. For some odd reason it felt so good to be with her. I snaked my arms around her waist and pulled her onto the couch. She laughed that gorgeous, little laugh of hers. I couldn’t help but smile. If anyone could make me feel better it was Joy. I pulled her glasses off her face and she tried to tackle me to get them back. I laughed holding them far out of her reach. She was now laying on my stomach, inches away from my face. Without breaking eye contact with me, she reached out and grabbed her glasses and when she did so she took hold of my hand. Our smiles vanished as we stared into each others eyes. Our eyelids started to flutter shut and we started to move ever so slowly toward each other.
“Umm, guys? What are you doing? ” Luanna had evidentially walked in the room. Crap.
Joy pulled herself off me so swiftly it could have set a world record or something.
“Nothing, sis. Dustin was being a jerk as usual.” As she closed her sentence off she turned towards me smirking that signature smirk of hers that all of a sudden seemed to drive me crazy. She winked and I caught a trace of a lip bite as she walked out of the room, leaving me with her twin. What was I going to do?!
“Haha, what was that about? Lemme guess, you hit her?” Anna smirked.
“Ha. Ha. Funny. Like I’d hit a girl. No, I took her glasses..” This was going to go over so badly.
“Mmhm. You two’d make a good couple.” My heart sunk.
“You think?” I questioned.
“Hon, it’s obvious y’all like each other. You guys just almost kissed. Don’t deny the feels, Dust.”
I was so hurt. I liked her. Right? I didn’t like Joy like that. Did I? Agh. Why is this so confusing?
“We did not almost just kiss!” I tried to defend myself.
“Keep telling yourself, babe!” She winked at me and walked out of the room.
I sunk into the couch. Great. My crush is not only dating her ex but she thinks I’d be good with her twin and her twin and I just had a moment. What am I going to do?
