Chapter 15 - Why Me?
**Dustin’s POV**
We finally got to the station. I was boiling over. Why were they taking m family from me?!
*Buzz*
My iPhone vibrated in my pocket. I had a new text.
‘Tonight was a lot of fun, we should do it again sometime soon. Xx ~L’
I smiled. I texted her back:
‘Totally! But for now, I’m at the police station..ugh why me?’
‘WHY?! What happened? What did you do? Are you ok?’
‘I’m...they’re trying to take my family from me..’
‘I’m on my way. I’m bringing a friend too.’
‘ok’
‘I’ll see you in a few.’
‘Bye’
I shoved my phone back into the pocket. Bridget looked at me with glassy eyes. I beckoned her over to me. She crawled in my lap and buried her head into my chest. I encased her into a hug. Soon I felt my shirt getting wet and I knew she was crying. Thomas came over and sat next to me. I took and arm and threw it over my terrified little brother. Clara looked over a me from across the room. I knew she was mad at me and I had to talk to her. I picked up Bridget and set her down next to Thomas.
“I’ll be right back,” I whispered, “ok? Everything’s going to be ok.”
I gave her a reassuring look and walked over to Clara. I sat down.
“What do you want?” She turned her head away from me. I could hear it in her voice she had been crying.
“Clara,” I felt like the worst brother in the world, “I’m sorry.”
“Dustin, why aren’t you ever around anymore? You’ve never around. And then you brought that girl home..”
“Clara, I brought her home because she had nowhere to go and I was helping her out. I knew Amber and Ashton weren’t home and it would be safe too.”
“I still don’t get it! You haven’t been around for us!”
“Do you really want to know where I’ve been?” I had never told any of the kids where I go after school and then late at night and very early in the morning.
She nodded. I took a deep breath.
“I’ve been working. In two months I’m turning 18 and I’ll be a legal adult. So that means, I’ll get to kick Amber and Ashton out. I’ll get to be your legal guardian. And..I’ll own the house.”
“So, that doesn’t explain why you’ve been gone.”
“I’ve been working. After school I work at the grocery store as a cashier. Then after dinner I work at a bar as a server and in the early mornings before school I work in the bakery. I have had to save up a bunch of money so that when I own the house I can pay for it and can support all of us.”
Her eyes flooded with tears.
“I’m so sorry I judged you Dustin.”
I pulled her into a hug.
“It’s ok, Clara.” I kissed the top of her head. “I promise everything’s going to be ok.”
The doors dinged open and in walked Luanna and a boy.
‘Who was he?’ I wondered.
**Luanna’s POV**
They were in the police station?! Why? Oh my I hope he’s ok! I texted him back that I would meet him there.
