Not much has changed since 6th grade. 9th grade isn't any better. The homework is worse, the teachers are meaner, and the kids, well they aren't kids anymore.
Rumors spread about me. "Dirty cheater." "Worst person ever." I was basically a nobody, typical. I had no friends, Kaitlin was one of the most popular girls in the school. She had her two "best friends" always by her side. Their group name was, "Kaitlin, Carrie, and Carol." I'll admit, it's catchy.
"Hey Joe, any new stories?" I asked my friend from the schools newspaper. I decided to take up the schools newspaper because I like photography. I like communicating through pictures. "Nope, this school is more boring than my grandma's house." He chuckled.
Alright, so my only friends are nerds."Great." I mouthed. I turned to walk out of the newspaper office and knocked into this kid. I recognized him anywhere. Ryan Sanders, the most popular boy in our school. He was also the most jerkiest. Yep, I just made up a word.
"Watch where you're going nerd." he got up and dusted himself off. "I was, what are you doing in the newspaper office?" I asked him. "Umm nothing. I was coming to make fun of these geeks." he ushered towards Joe and the crew. "Oh I think you dropped something." "Oh what?" He asked and looked around the area. "Your massive ego. What are you really doing here?" I asked with a flat look. "Nothing, goodbye douches." he turned and left the room.
"Nice one Zo." Joe high-fived me. "Hey, I'd stand up for you guys any day." I smiled to him. Joe and the crew are good friends, I hope they don't turn out like Katie.
When my parents used to be together, me and Katie had this friend named Daniel. He was the one who got me into photography. He really brought out the real me. He sadly had to move to Wisconsin to be with his grandma. I always had a crush on him when we were kids. I really miss him.
I sat down at my regular lunch table and started eating my sandwich. I saw a flash of color, it was someone sitting down at the table.
"Hey Zo." Carol said. "What's up?" The devilish Carrie followed and sat down. Then the worst of them all sat down. "Yeah, how ya holding up?" Katie said and sat in between them on the opposite side of the lunch table. "What do you guys want?" I asked rudely. Normally I don't bother talking to them. "Just saying hi, so anyway what's your plans this weekend?" The blubbery mouth Carrie said. "Why is it any of your concern?" I poked a fork at my fruit. "So, nothing?" Carol giggled. "Just that, the whole school is going to be at Jerry's on Saturday." Katie said and clutched her purse. "And...?" I continued. "And you're going to be sitting home like the loser you are." Carrie said, getting upset that I wasn't bothered by her prier statement.
Jerry's is a popular restaurant where our school meets up every Saturday. Apparently you're "cool" if you go. I only went to one and it was boring. Everyone just sat there on their phones.
"I guess that's my cue to find a new table." I grabbed my tray and tried to walk away. My body jolted when Katie grabbed my arm and pulled me back. "So I guess you're not going? Good, it will be much more fun without you. Just like, without our friendship, my life gets better every day." She half whispered in my ear. She let me go and I walked to another table. Ugh, I hate people sometimes.
I flopped down on my bed as my mom began pestering me. "Can you at least tell me if Arlene got pregnant yet?!" She begged. She thinks she's cool if she bets on which girl is going to get pregnant first. I wish I could roll my eyes in monologue.
"Don't wanna talk about it." I mumbled with my face down against the pillow. "Well here, take this." she handed me an envelope. "What is it?" I sat up. "A letter from Dan-" she got cut off by me screaming.
He always writes letters to me. He's so sweet.
Hey Zo! What's happening over there? Nothing much over here. My grandmas in a resting home so I can come and visit. Give me a call when you get this to schedule a good time for me to come up. See you soon hopefully.
Signed Daniel Patterson."Omg!" I screamed, my mom still in the room. "I guess it's good news?" My mother pestered, putting a finger to her ear. "He's coming to visit!" I kept in my yelling voice. "Great, you know we have neighbors right?" She stated sarcastically. I gave her a flat look, a signal to leave my room.
I dialed his number and he picked up. "Oh my gosh, it's really you!" I said as soon as he said hello. "Yep, it's me." he chuckled. "So when is a good time for me to come?" "This weekend!" I said excitedly. "Woah, that's in like 4 days." he said. I frowned, even though he couldn't see me. "How about I come up in a few months and stay the rest of the school year and all summer?" He asked and immediately cheered me up. "Omg yes!" "Sounds good." he smiled. That's how good of friends we were, I could tell he was smiling through the phone.
