Chapter Four | You Sit The Fuck Down

November 2023

As Vinny and I sat next to each other in the dimly lit restaurant, I could feel the tension in the air.

I knew this wasn't just a casual lunch - Vinny had something serious on his mind, and I braced myself for what was to come.

"Okay, I asked you out here to have lunch," Vinny said, his voice low and measured.

I glanced at him sideways, my heart racing, because I could sense that whatever he was about to say had the potential to either infuriate me or cause a scene right then and there.

"Yes," I replied, trying to keep my tone neutral.

"Because I wanted to talk about Jenni. Jenni and I talked about you, and Jenni wants to speak with you and I want you guys to talk so I could have you be around my roommates," Vinny said, confirming my suspicions.

"Right," I said simply, bracing myself for what was to come.

"And remember our conversation," Vinny said.

I rolled my eyes in exasperation.

"And you were like, oh, yeah, we should talk," Vinny continued, recounting our previous conversation.

I nodded in acknowledgment, though inwardly I was seething. I knew Vinny was trying to play peacemaker, to get Jenni and me to resolve our issues so that I could feel comfortable around his friends without the constant drama.

As much as I appreciated his intentions, I couldn't help but feel ambushed by this entire situation.

"I want you guys to talk it out," Vinny said, his eyes pleading with me to cooperate.

I sighed, realizing that as much as I disliked the idea, I owed it to Vinny - and to our relationship - to at least make an effort.

"I don't mind talking to her the next time I see her," I conceded, trying to sound as diplomatic as possible.

I knew that Vinny wanted Jenni and me to work out our differences because he was serious about our relationship and wanted me to be able to be around his friends without constant drama.

As much as the idea of talking to Jenni made my skin crawl, I was willing to make the effort, if only to put Vinny's mind at ease.

"Okay, good, because she's here," Vinny said, and my heart sank as I watched him stand up to greet Jenni, who was approaching the table with her fiancé, Zack.

I stood up as well, steeling myself for the confrontation that was about to unfold. "Hi," I said, my voice barely above a whisper as I sat back down, my eyes fixed on the newcomers.

"Hello," Jenni replied, her tone guarded but not overtly hostile.

Zack echoed the greeting, and I could feel the tension in the air as we all settled into our seats.

"I'm glad you guys came out to have lunch with us," Vinny said.

The silence that followed was deafening as Jenni and Zack ordered their drinks and food, and Vinny reached over to gently squeeze my hand, offering me silent support.

I smiled at him and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek, grateful for his unwavering support. "You guys look great together," Zack commented, and Vinny beamed with pride.

"I know. She makes me happy, and that's why I want Jenni and her to talk it out because Asia will be in my life for a very long time; I want to marry her," Vinny said, his words causing a flutter in my chest.

I took a sip of my drink, my eyes trained on Jenni's face as I watched her reaction to Vinny's declaration.

"Wow, you're serious about her," Jenni said, her expression a mix of surprise and something I couldn't quite place.

"Very. So, after our last conversations, I wanted you two to talk because," Vinny began, but I interrupted him, feeling the need to take control of the situation.

"I can tell her how I feel," I said, and Vinny nodded in agreement.

"Go ahead," he said, giving me the floor.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what I was about to say. "I honestly do not know where your problem with me came from, but I feel like you were acting up for the camera to get ratings for your show. I'm known to have a bad temper, so I do not handle situations where people come at me well. Sammi has vouched for you as a good person, but I feel like all the times that we have met, you haven't been a good person, so I want to know why your behavior around me has been so terrible," I said, my voice calm but firm.

Jenni cleared her throat, her expression unreadable. "Truthfully, I came here today to make up with you and apologize for my behavior, I see how serious Vinny is about you, and it makes me want to make things right with you because someday you will be family, I'm sorry for starting with you; I was just taking out my anger towards other things out on you and you are not a pussy so when you didn't back down it kinda made me angrier," she said, her words taking me by surprise.

I was stunned, having expected her to play the victim card or to deflect my accusations. But here she was, apologizing and acknowledging her role in our conflicts. I wasn't sure if I could fully trust her sincerity, but I decided to let it go for now, to move the conversation forward.

"Well, I apologize for putting my hands on you," I said, my voice softer now.

"I hope we can move forward and even try to be friends because aside from the drama, you seem like a very cool girl, and I think we can get along very well," Jenni said, a tentative smile on her face.

"Well, she's going to be around more often now that you guys have squashed the drama so I think you two crazies can be good friends," Vinny said, his eyes alight with relief and joy.

"You guys have similar traits, so that's probably why you guys clashed so hard," Zack observed, and Jenni chuckled in agreement.

Jenni chuckles. "That's probably why," Jenni said.

As we all settled into a more comfortable conversation, I couldn't help but feel a sense of cautious optimism.

Maybe, just maybe, Jenni and I could find a way to move past our differences and forge a genuine friendship.

After all, if Vinny was serious about making me a permanent part of his life, then I would need to find a way to coexist with his friends and family. And with Vinny by my side, I felt like I could conquer anything.
