Entry 2: Phoenix Harkiss

I was walking to the Great Hall when Lillianna pulled on my arm, making me stop and turn around.

“Phoenix, remember about a week ago when they told us about the Goblet of Fire?” She was wringing her hands together nervously.

“Yeah, what about it? I never entered, so my name's not going to be chosen.”

“About that-”

“Into the Great Hall, Professor Everwood has an announcement to make.” We were ushered into the Great Hall, and whatever Lillianna was trying to tell me was cut short.

We all sat down at the long tables for each of our houses. I was surrounded by friends. Cara Blackwood sat across from me, and next to her was Midnight. They are both awesome Gryffindors and two of my best friends. Joey and Lillianna were next to me, Lillianna was still really nervous about something.

I glanced over at the Ravenclaw table and saw two more of my friends, Azazel and Evie. Since they were in Ravenclaw, I often asked them for help with homework and such. They are both extremely bright, and I'm not saying I'm completely stupid, just without them, I don't think I'd be in my fifth year.

Over at the Slytherin table was one of the Slytherins who hated me, because of course I was a Gryffindor. Her name was Ava Addams.

Professor Everwood was now standing at the podium. “As you all know, the Goblet has been out for several days, and we are about to choose our twelve people from its flames.”

“First from Slytherin House.”

A piece of paper shot out of the bright flames, and Professor Everwood caught it in his hand.

“Scarlett Mackintosh.” Applause from the Slytherin table came and she walked up to Professor Everwood and continued on into the back room.

“Cyrus Hunt.” More scattered applause and he walked into the back room.

“Ava Addams.” She smiled brightly, for a Slytherin at least, and walked past the teachers and into the back with her fellow Slytherins.

Next was Hufflepuff. Now all of the Hufflepuffs looked distinctly worried, and I couldn't blame them. When this tournament was last held, one of their own was killed in the last round.

“Ashlynn Everdeen.”

“Melanie Airagon.”

“Jade Millow.”

There were no cheers from the Hufflepuff table, just sad faces and worried glances. Man were they paranoid.

Then again, who was I to talk? I was a Gryffindor who was too afraid to put her name in the Goblet. I was an unbrave Gryffindor, what an oxymoron.

Ravenclaws were next, they all sat there, they didn't look scared. More like whatever came at them, they could solve it. And honestly, something like that would probably be really useful.

“Skyler Lewis.”

“Evie Fisher.” She bounced up to the stage, her wild blond hair everywhere as it usually was.

“Azazel Brighton.” To say he looked nervous would have been an understatement. He's incredibly shy when it comes to being around other people.

Last was the Gryffindors, Joey sat next to me, chanting under her breath and crossing her fingers. Obviously she wanted to be a part of this.

“Cara Blackwood.” Cara gave me a smile from across the table and walked past the teachers and into the back room.

Joey was chanting harder now, her whispers becoming really loud. “Why don't you just say a spell while you're at it?” She stuck out her tongue at me and went right back to her chanting.

“Midnight Capella.” Midnight stood and followed the path that Cara had taken. Joey's eyes were squeezed shut so tightly, I didn't think she was ever going to open them again.

“Phoenix Harkiss.”

“What? I didn't even put my name in the Goblet.” I tried to shrink myself, I didn't want to do this.

Joey grabbed my arm and yanked me upright in the aisle, then she gave me a good shove. I walked past Professor Everwood and into the back room.

Midnight and Cara were waiting for me. “I thought you didn't put your name in.” Midnight said when I reached her.

“I didn't, there has to be some mistake.”

Cara was biting her lower lip, I looked at her and she gave me a weak smile. “What do you know?”

“Lillianna and Joey put your name in the Goblet.”

My heart sank. Two of my best friends had gone behind my back and did something that I wasn't brave enough to face. Then again, maybe that's why they did it.

I needed to be brave, so maybe this is for the best.

“When I win, I'm going to kill them.” Cara let out a sigh of relief and Midnight laughed.

This wasn't going to end well and we all knew it. Me winning and having my name living on through history? Fat chance.
