- in which you start to understand why fluttershy is called an animal whisperer

it was saturday, which meant that today was the perfect day for you and your girlfriend to hang out. no school and most of your friends had their own plans—so you weren't going to be bothered.

it became a tradition for you two to spend this day together, and it was always something you looked forward to.

today was warm and nice outside for a picnic. it was a perfect mixture of both of your favorite types of weather. while fluttershy enjoyed more sunny, bright days, you were fond of more cloudy, quiet days. you were also thankful the sun wasn't beaming.

the basket was packed and you were ready to go. fluttershy volunteered at an animal shelter on saturdays as well. so you were headed there to get her.

the walk was peaceful, and after some time, you were standing at the entrance of the shelter. the lady at the front desk told you to check the back for volunteers. there, you found a lush yard full of greenery. dogs were playing in the grass and others laid on the concrete for coolness.

one thing you didn't see was fluttershy. in fact, you didn't see any of the volunteers in the backyard. "fluttershy?" you tried not to yell, but you raised your voice just loud enough for her to hear.

the backyard was connected to another building that had many doors. it appeared to be a building for the dog kennels and employees. you decided to walk by the windows to find your girlfriend.

"fluttershy, i'm here!" but she still didn't answer. you peered through a window and saw what looked like a miniature vet room. from behind you, however, you heard a low growl.

you slowly turned to see a german shepherd staring you down. you didn't have to be an animal expert to realize he was angry—or cautious. "oh, um—it's okay," you held out your hand hesitantly. the dog didn't seem to care and bared his teeth even more.

you weren't necessarily afraid of dogs, but big dogs have always made you nervous. right now you were backed up against a wall with no one around—and that wasn't helpful with your fear.

the dog moved closer to you at a slow pace. his teeth were still showing and his growls got louder. the hair on his back was up and you didn't think you could get out of this by just walking away. all you could do was call for help but no one seemed to hear. you closed your eyes out of fear.

"(name)?" a familiar, soft voice called out and you immediately knew who it was. fluttershy stood outside a door while facing you, but she quickly panicked as she saw the scene. "(name)!"

the dog didn't flinch and continued staring you down. he was only a few feet away from you. "fluttershy!" you couldn't open your eyes. the dog was dangerously close.

you felt someone in front of you and you slightly peered ahead. fluttershy was stood protectively between you and the dog. "apollo." her voice was stern and you saw the dog back down. he whimpered and bowed his head. "that was very mean of you to do that."

your eyes were now fully open as you watched your girlfriend discipline the canine. "you can't get adopted if you try to scare everyone away." the german shepherd looked guilty and apologetic while fluttershy seemed disappointed. she turned back to you and smiled—she had an idea.

"fluttershy-" she grabbed your arm and held it out to apollo. your girlfriend was now behind you as you both were crouching to the canine's level. she guided your hand with hers and rested her other hand on your shoulder.

the dog looked hesitant and looked at you both. "see? she's friendly." you were very nervous, but fluttershy gently squeezed your shoulder for reassurance—she wouldn't let anything bad happen. "it's okay," she soothed the dog.

apollo was reluctant and sniffed your palm. after he smelled you, his hair went back down and his body visibly relaxed. you took that as a sign to pet him. you smiled as the dog calmed into your touch—he didn't seem that scary anymore.

fluttershy observed with a small grin and you giggled as the dog licked you. "now, go play with the others, apollo. i'll see you next saturday." apollo licked you one last time before going off on his own.

fluttershy helped you stand up and you hugged her; she laughed. you pulled away to thank her and fluttershy nodded. she looked over to your basket on the floor, "i think i'm ready for that picnic now." you sighed, "after that, i think i could use a nap." you both laughed and you held her hand. fluttershy responded,

"picnic first, then nap."
