Chapter Five
When I woke up I was back in my room. I couldn't believe it, I had just closed my eyes and now I was back in my room. Then I realized I couldn't move. I was bandaged up all over. Then I tried to look around but it hurt to move my head too. Then I saw my mom standing over me. Did they let her come back? She looked as if she didn't sleep at all and she was in the same clothes. How did she get to come back? Then she was telling me she was sorry. Sorry for what? I was still groggy. What was she saying?
I was closing my eyes again before I even knew it. I guess I was out of it for a while because when I woke up again there was a new nurse there and my mom looked like she had washed and changed her clothes. When she talked to me this time I could understand her. She said she was sorry she wasn't in there before I went up to be operated on. She was filling out medical papers so they could.
OK, so they never took her away. Now I wouldn't have to worry about where I would go. She kissed me on the forehead and told me she loved me. Then she sat down on the side of the bed beside me. She said that she was sorry about what dad did and she was going to make sure he would never come near me again. I just wished it had never happened to begin with. It was going so good. I didn't understand why he was so mad or why he did it. We were doing so good and getting along like a family.
Mom said the police were looking for him and he would be punished for doing this. She said he would be in jail for a long time for hurting me like he did. I hoped she was right. I never wanted him to come by ever again.
I was in the hospital for almost two weeks. Mom didn't stay the nights with me because she had to work, but she was there every day. On the day I got to leave she told me that she asked the Seekers to start babysitting again. That made me happy. I used to enjoy my time with them. I doubt it will be the exactly the same now that I am almost ten, but it will be nice to have them there again. It gave me something to look forward to. I wondered if it would be the same group of people or if they had all moved onto other jobs since they were older too. It was still a little hard to move.
My body was still sore. The doctors and nurses said it would be until my ribs healed. Breaks take a while to mend is what they told me. I was however not bruised like before. They had gone almost completely away. Some of the deeper ones were now a mix of yellow and green in color. They said before I knew it those would be gone too. I'm just glad the ones on my face were gone. The others could be hidden with clothes.
Mom told me that the police still hasn't found dad yet, but they were still looking. One would be watching outside the apartments when we were there in case he came by there. I hoped he did so they could get him. I wasn't scared anymore. I was mad. I wanted him to get caught so that maybe someone would beat him up like he did me. I wanted him to hurt so bad that he would think he was dying.
We were home for one week and sure enough he came there. He had made it to the door and they arrested him. Mom let me watch them cuff him and put him in their car. The look of hate he had on his face was the stuff nightmares were made of. As the old saying goes, if looks could kill we would have dropped right there. Even as they pulled away with him in the backseat he never stopped looking at us like that.
Even though I knew he was locked up I was scared he would kill us, so I didn't want to sleep that night. When I did doze off I had bad dreams. All I could see was his face with that look. I could even smell his breath and aftershave like it had been on the night he hurt me. I would wake up almost screaming. Mom came in to check on me once. She brought me a glass of water and sat with me for a bit when she saw I was still awake. It felt kind of odd with her being there. She has never that I could remember done anything caring like that before. I just hoped her caring side stays.
