Where the city ended and outskirts began, the Ashlands and the Scar were the most desolate lands after the premature Apocalypse. The Ashlands were just as they were called, a desert place that could have been rural towns before the Apocalypse hit. It was clear that such a war had transformed the environment where water and grass died and only sand and rocks remained.
Demons had attempted to make it a stronghold with structures containing massive drills to mine for Earth's rarest minerals. Only the most dauntless demons dared work at these structures due to presence of the Stygian and its other Ashworms, until the demons managed to capture the Stygian for themselves.
After the Stygian's fall at the hands of War, many of the Ashworms that survived, had fled to unknown locations or they had perished overtime. From there, the demons had relocated their mining operations to the Scar: a much rockier place than its sandy counterpart in the outskirts. Upon Wrath's arrival, a huge mining facility was constructed. The drills never stopped nor did the conveyors and the demons flourished in their findings of Earth's resources.
But Wrath never cared for jewels and ore, instead he spent time in the facility's arena for his own pleasure until his capture and defeat by Fury and the facility had been quiet ever since.
Until the day came where rogue angels usurped the Scar, killing most of the demons and keeping souls of them, humans, and animals as trophies.
Deep in the heart of the prison cells in the underground bowels of the Scar's massive mine, one prisoner, a young human man named Mathias Dimitrescu sat in the corner of his cell listening to the sound of the drill digging away into what seemed like a bottomless hole.
Mathias, recognizable by his abundant brown hair, blue-green eyes, and ebony jacket, had come to this part of Earth in hopes of meeting his friend Emily Victus. They had been communicating online via social media for years before the Apocalypse, and planned to meet up in person while both of their families were on vacation.
Not only did he come to her country so that they could finally meet but he was supposed to be on a tour to promote the latest book he had published. He was trying to make it as a writer and hoped that the book tour would be good for his career.
Until the Apocalypse arrived. Mathias said he would text Emily when his plane landed even though he knew she was working that evening, until a meteor struck the aircraft before he could send the text. The impact had blown the plane in half while it was descending.
Mathias considered himself lucky then when the crash came, he had been sitting at the very back of the plane brainstorming his next book and the plane went down head first giving him no choice but to strap himself in and hold on tight.
When he finally crawled out of the debris after realizing he was the only survivor, he was looking upon the ruins of the city and thought of Emily in the hospital. Whatever happened contemplated him to believe that she had hid somewhere safe where none of these invading creatures could find her. But before Mathias could search for help, he was spotted by demon scouts who came to the crash site, hoping to salvage it.
Since then Mathias had been locked in this cell, oblivious to what had occurred above the ground in the time that passed and now facility was occupied by the angels. Mathias had only seen one of them donned in white and golden armor with majestic feathery wings and a spear who came to examine what other prisoners the demons had rounded up. Not once did the angel consider releasing him and Mathias felt like that had tore him apart. He may have just had his new career as a writer destroyed and certainly if this was a worldwide event, who knew if his family survived the ordeal? Escape was impossible with angels at every corner and he could only hope that someday he would be rescued if starvation or disease didn't kill him first.
